Strange Noise From Tranny/Help!!!
Strange Noise From Tranny/Help!!!
1995 Nissan Maxima SE 5-speed manual
I just got my axles rebuilt and replaced about 2 weeks ago by a local mechanic in my area. That was all fine and dandy, however now the car is making a strange sound when i lift my foot up off the clutch, it sounds like some part of the tranny is spinning and making a subtle clicking sound when the car is not moving, when i go into first gear and start driving the clicking sound is even worse, but its not the same the car makes when your cv joints have gone out. U pretty much hear it through all the gears, until u get the engine spinning fast enough where u just cant hear the clicking at all. Then when i down shift say from 3rd to 2nd it makes a whinning noise ??? Also i am finding that when i change the gears its a little 'sticky' not smooth.
So i went back to the same mechanic who did the axles and he test drove the car and heard the same noise, so they put it up on the lift and try to hear exactly where the noise is coming from. They say its not the axles, its just a coincedence that the noise pretty much started happening when the axles were changed. He then goes on to tell me that it could either be the through-out bearing in the clutch or the tranny itself, and they said they had no way of finding out unless they drop the tranny. Do i want to pay for all that labor to have them drop the tranny just to find out that the problem is i need a new transmission, (which i can't afford right now) and in that case, they would have to put the tranny back in, just to take it out again when i do have the money.
Right now i am definitely hopping its the through-out bearing, but i wish i did not have to go through all of that just to find out whats wrong.
Any Ideas/Suggestions - would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance

Re: Strange Noise From Tranny/Help!!!
It is one of 4 things. 1st your drive shafts are bad.. (metal transfers noise very easily and it is unreasonable for them to deny it is the axels. 2nd The bolts at the end of the axels are not tight enough (310N-M is the proper torque) and caused a bearing to fail. 3rd they did something wrong or used bad parts and caused the Dif. bearings to fail in your tranny. (A bad CV rebuild and improper install procedures can cause this.)
4th they forgot to add tranny fluid after the change and you have starved and damaged the inside of the tranny. Filling now will stop any futher damnage for the time being.

Don't drive it that much. I had a Hon-Duh that made a similar noise. It was something in the trans. Had I not drove it another 25 miles after the noise started, I would have saved some of my tranny. Instead all the metal which cam from the click click noise tore up all my bearings, killing the tranny altogether. The part that actually failed was a 25 dollar piece.
