Clutch / Tranny concerns on Test Drive
Clutch / Tranny concerns on Test Drive
I test drove a 92 SE today, and it had some clutch/tranny problems that I'm unfamiliar with. After reading up, it seems like a new throw out bearing is what is needed. Here's the deal, no noise or anything wierd, except once I push the clutch in, there are some strange noises. These same strange noises continue as I let the clutch out and accelerate in first gear, and also in second. I didn't get up to any high speeds, but I'm guesssing the noise would probably hang around at higher speeds too.
The shifting action was good, and there weren't any bad vibrations coming up through the shifter, so I'm thinking that the tranny is alright.
So, my obvious question, what do clutch jobs run these days for labor? Also, if all I wanted to do was replace the throwout bearing, what are some estimated costs for that?

the throwout bearing is about a $30 part, but you've got to pull the tranny to do it. at that point, you might as well replace the clutch too. it won't cost much (if any) more labor to replace the clutch.
As for the noises, it could be the main input shaft bearing (inside the tranny) is bad, or the throwout bearing.
usually if it's the throwout bearing, the pedal will feel "crunchy" as you're pushing it down, or it will make noises whenever the clutch is pushed in, no matter what the gear.
if it's a "growling" sound in low gears- whether on or off the throttle (but usually you have to be in gear).. but if you hear that, that's a sign the bearings are shot in the tranny.
The main bearing in this tranny is about $300 just for the one. (it's the size of a coaster, about 3" diameter).
a complete rebuild on my tranny cost me $850 and 3 days. they replaced all the synchros and bearings and seals in the tranny. I had the tranny out myself though. if you pay them to remove/install the tranny, expect to pay at least another $300 for labor there.
good luck!
