20% tint

I have 20% tint on my car...it's dark green. I've been pulled over 2 times in the 2 years i've had it done. both times they have warned me about my tint...and lack of front license plate. I'll take some pictures right now and post them. I'm warning you, she's a little dirty right now.

I have 20% on my back window and yes its pretty dark. It depends on where you live on if you are going to get pulled over. Almost all of the time though its not because of the tint but for something else and then they may give you a ticket for the tint. Roll your windows down if possible when you see a cop and avoid driving next to them or stopping near them and you won't have any trouble.

Another thing

Another thing to do is pull back the cover to your sunroof (if you have one that is). I ride with my sunroof cover closed to make the inside darker. If I see a cop I open the sunroof cover and let more light in.

If you have lighter interior the tints dont look as dark. I had grey cloth and the tints kinda seemed light to me. When I got black leather they looked a lot better. They are dark but not to the point that you cant see if someones in the car. Cant tell who it is though. At night, you cant see a thing inside, except for my indiglos and head unit cuz they are mad bright.

20% on the driver and front passenger side windows WILL get you into trouble eventually. I have 20% on the rear side, and rear window, and it is DARK! It's so dark, I have problems seeing when backing up at night. I think it's time to get halogen reverse lights. It's ridiculous, 1/2 the time, I'm backing up near blind at night, in poorly lit areas. I got 35% on the two front side windows because I wanted to lessen the chance of getting tickets. BTW, did you know there is no law regarding actual percentage tint? It is a matter of the driver being visible from outside for identication, basically, the cops wanna see the driver from the outside. Being young, and with the way I drive, I decided to go 35% on the front. If you are older, and drive with less gusto, I wouldn't worry about it too much. My Volvo 850 Turbo has some serious tinting on it, and I've never had a problem in that car. You'll never get pulled over for just having tints. But IF you ever get pulled over for the tiniest of things, I guaruntee they will tack on the tinted window ticket. And because the law is as subjective as it is, you won't win. Your only hope would be removing the tint to have the ticket cancelled. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't.

As mentioned already interior colour will affect how dark the tint looks. I had "frost" (light grey) leather seats installed when I bought my 98' Max, and the rest of the interior is black, so it's a really nice effect.

i have "medium" tints on my car which is probably around 15-20% i've had them on for almost 10 months ... they're pretty dark especially if you look at the at the right angle ....i live in NYC and i haven't had any problems with the cops at all ... it all depends on where you live and how much the cops enforce the rule ...

Are you sure about this, I have not found anything to back this up. Tint laws vary from state to state, same thing as enforcement. If tint is illegal in a state, it's illegal! No IFs ... it is the choice of the police whether they wish to enforce it or not.

Here's a lil snippet of Michigan tint law:
The Michigan code # P.A. 1980, No. 220, SS.1, specifies that vehicles
must comply with the following:
-Windshields may have a non-reflective transparent tinting applied
along the top 4 inches.
-Front Side Windows may have a non-reflective transparent tinting
applied along the top 4 inches.
-Back Side and Rear Windows may have any non-reflective window tinting
film applied, if the vehicle is equipped with left and right outside
rearview mirrors in working order.

Here's a lil snippet from an officer with the Michigan State Police:
If you were to be involved in a traffic crash, a police officer may
determine that the tinted windows interfered with or obstructed your
clear vision, and you could be subjected to a traffic citation based on the subjective judgement of the police officer, regardless of percent of tinting. You are also prohibited from using a silver or gold film, or any treatment that creates 35% or more reflectivity.

Not trying to be a smart ***, but if there is a tint law that prohibits certain % of tint, or specifies no-tint on certain windows, it's just your luck. Hopefully, no cop would pull you over for something as small as tint. My 0.02

Every state does have different percentages that are legal. Check tintdude.com for your state. With most cops, I do believe they don't care as long as they can see you buy then again they can pull you over for it if they want. I have 20% tint on my back window and I have no trouble backing up at night.

it all depends on where u live...some places, cops act really gay, others they don't....in Maplewood where i live, i drive everywhere and never get stopped...same thing with Newark which is like a bad type area but once i entered Milburn, a cleaner, safer environment, i got stopped once....u just gotta play it safe...if u gonna rock tints, can't drive as fast as u used to cause they'll just have an extra reason to stop u...but it's not as big of a deal as people make it, atleast not in NJ....i just got my inspection for 75 bucks...and i'm covered 4 2 years...20% isn't too bad though...i got 35 and it's dark, 20 is dark too but if i barely get stopped, u should have no problem

Ummmm.

20% is quite a bit darker than 35%.

I'm happy I sticked with 35% .... and I'm in Michigan, so I'm already breaking the law

No more speeding for me, reduce the chances of getting pulled over.

In new your state, the law says that any window adjacent and in front of the drivers seat (drivers window, front passenger and windshield) can have tint of no less than 70%. That means that 70% of light has to be able to enter through your windows. The back two can be as dark as you want as long as you have two rear view mirrors with a clear view behind you. I got pulled over in a checkpoint and got 4 tickets. Went to court last week and the officer showed so i asked for a postponement.

State tint laws

Above are the laws for window tinting. Some states make no mention of reflective etc.

Tint Laws

If you look at the previous threads regarding window tint you'll see that in fact there are percentage laws for most states. In WI (where I live) for example 50% is legal on the front windows of a 4-door car and 35% on the back 3 windows. I don't know if anyone explained this earlier, but I made the assumption that people knew....the percentage of tint is the amount of light let through after tinting. So theoretically 5% is twice as dark as 10%. Therefore the difference between 35 and 20 is fairly significant.
