wow I'm kind of a moron....will this hurt my car?

i just recently changed my own oil for the first time but for some
reason I assumed that our Max's took 5 quarts of oil. I'm at home last night and I happened to be looking through my manual and it says
our maxima's only need 4 and a quarter quarts of oil!!

Will having this excess oil hurt my car in any way?

Overfilling is, in general, worse than underfilling. At least that is what I have always been told by mechanics whom I trust. Just go bleed a little bit out from the pan and you should be okay.

Did your car not start smokeing?? Always check dipstick and Oil filter after change to make sure there aren't any leaks and make sure you have enough oil in the Engine.

The extra pressure from the extra oil can POSSIBLY lead to premature oil seal failure. Basically, your main oil seal will start driping oil if enough pressure builds up and unseats the seal. Happens quite a bit actually. That's the MAIN reason I do all my oil changes, besides the fact I can use a better quality oil. I have NEVER gotten the proper amount of oil put in by a "10-min" lube shop, even by the dealer.

I'd drain a quart out.

just drain it a bit, you'll be fine.

And no, you're not a moron. There's a thread about how to turn off the auto-headlamp feature...now that's moronic.

I've already driven the car for about 400 - 500 miles or so since I last changed my oil. actually, maybe this is wierd but the car feels awesome sicne the oil change. No strange noises, no leaks (yet) and the engine even sounds a bit quieter than before.

Guess I'll just go drain a little oil out
thanks guys

Hmmm

You should be fine. I always fill with 4 1/4 qts. and also put a little in the filter before puting it back on. So if you only put 5 in, you have to think the filter will take about 1/4+ to circulate. I have had no problems in 16K miles. If you are nervous do like the others said and drain a little.

Driven.... look, you were wrong. you didnt understand, which you wouldn't if you didnt do the HID conversion. we all do it. We all make an *** of ourselves and normally we just go 'ooops' and let it go (and everyone forgets).

Just let go already.

Do I smell (of burning oil from the cats) a new mod coming here??

It's the overfilling the oil mod! It's been proven that the car will run better and no strange noises will emit from the engine. I bet it'll put out mad hp!

Attention all ye newbies: try this out and keep us posted. [no sarcasm intended]

Soon to be followed by the "Big puddle of oil on the garage floor" mod!

You'll gain a higher top-end because of the weight savings.

Ive been told what happens is when you overfill, your oil will foam up because the crankshaft is flailing around in it. If alot of your oil gets foamy its harder for the oil pickup to get non foamy oil.

Don't worry, if its only a few hundred miles. The original motor in my Monte SS used to leak from every seal and gasket on it (176K miles on the car), so I had to add a quart every 1500 miles or so. Once, I added in a quart of transmission fluid instead of oil! Both of them were blue Mobil 1 bottles, I just didn't realize which one I pulled out.

Anyway, the car was fine. Matter of fact, when we built the new motor for my Monte, we used tranny fluid to install the pistons in the cylinder bores. Trans fluid is a great detergent, good to use in a fresh motor for a 'lil while.

The new motor has over 14,000 on it already, and no trouble at all.

I always stand right next to my car when they change the oil and make sure the filter is actually changed, the right amount of oil is added (and the oil I bought, not their cheap stuff) and the filler cap is put back on!!

to much oil

Somebody's missing what happens when there's to much oil in the pan.----What happens is that if the oil level in the pan is to high the crankshaft hits the oil and starts foaming it. If the air doesn't seperate from the oil fast enough your oil presure will DROP. Your pumping oil and air. Thats the reason for cranckshaft wipers and drysump pumps. Look at the oil on the dipstick ---shoudn't be foamy. Al

What would be the cause of foam on the dipstick if you have the correct amount of oil?

Sometimes this happens on my other car which has 133K+ miles on it. I noticed if I use a thinner oil(Valvoline Maxlife 10W-30) it foams, but if I use thicker oil(Kendall GT-1 15W-40) it NEVER foams. I just attributed it to the Kendalls' claim of anti-foaming properties or the thicker vs. thinner oil. Not really sure yet, I just didn't care for the foam on the dipstick.

Any clue?

If I am not mistaken when you change your oil and oil filter the correct amount of oil is 4.6 quarts. So 5 quarts is pretty damn close. If you did not change your filter then it's like 4.2 quarts or something, if you did that then you put quite a bit to much oil in. If you changed your oil filter and allready put about 500 miles on the car you probably have about the correct amount of oil now. I don't think .4 quarts extra will do much harm, just don't do it again.
