I thought that 2000 323i are slow.
I ran with one last night, the **** had four people in the car and I only had one person besides me. I have 2000 SE 5-speed. I didn't launched that good, too much tire spin , should have slipped the clutch longer.
Anyways, he was right there with me when I went to second gear and stayed with me almost even till the third.
I was sure that it was 328i, but my friend driving behind me said that it was 323i.
Damn I thought my Max was faster ;(
Maybe I just didn't shift very well.
Oh well.

HEY WOODEAR WHERE ARE YOU??? =)

I see Woodear's name all over this one. I will let him do the comparison for you. 323i is not as fast as the 328i but still gets going for its size. So watch out for them especially after a few mods. But you better do better next time!! Shame on you driving a stick so sloppy... hehehe j/k

Supposely 328 is very very close with a Maxima, stick to stick. 323 should be a tiny bit slower, the 323 sports a 2.5L which makes 23hp less than the 2.8L, but BMW's are usually quite strong for their hp, people also say they underrate the hp abit, I have seem 260rwhp dyno sheet for stock 282hp 5406sp, average 240hp M roadster puts 216 to the wheels, so the crank hp of 170 and 193 for 2.5L and 2.8L might just be numbers on paper.

If you ask me, I will say, if driver skill being equal, 328 should be even with Maxima, and I will actually put money on Maxima if going against 323, dunno why you weren't winning, maybe he is modded.

BMW claims times of 7.0 0-60 for the 323i (2.5L 170HP). Don't know the weight on the cars but they must be geared damn agressively to pull times like that w/ only 170HP.

Yeah I think I launched pretty bad, to much tire spin.
I should have slipped the clutch longer and get a better start. And second gear shift wasn't any good either,
I went into the second too soon and chirped the wheels again, but after that I was starting to pull on him.
Well, I was sure it was 328i cause from the start he was side by side almost with me. But when I saw that it was 323i I felt even worse.

Just for kicks before that some guys pulls up next to me in the brand new M5, tinted out, he had some mods on it already, man the car sounded like it was an airplane.
I pulled on him in first and when he let it out, damnnnnn
it sounded like MIG29(I am russian, hehehehe ) flew by me. I noticed the larger quad pipes in the back. I guess that **** got himself an exhaust or something.
Anyways it was funn.

Yeah the gearing sure matters.
The 240hp M roadster(near 3100 lbs which is not even light), does 0-60 in 5.1, 13.7 in 1/4m, that's on par with the 320hp(or shall i say 345hp) muscle cars. so, it's really not only about the hp.

6.5 0-60, low 15's

They're surprisingly quick. I remember Motor Trend TV tested one and they were floored when it posted a 0-60 time of 6.4! That was like 3 tenths faster than the 328 they tested. It would be a good race against a stock 5spd Max, 2000 or otherwise. My mom has a '99 323 auto but I stomp her 'cause I've got a 5spd. Cool cars though. That's what I really wanted. (Please don't disown me).

That test with Motor Trend was the coupe. They said the coupes were a couple tenths faster than the sedans.
