New Clutch @ 4K Miles!!!

Well... so far everything was ok. I rewired the side lights, did clear corners, rewired the fog lights, and installed a Sub to make the BOSE system act like it was supposed to... and was happy... Until...

2 AM on a semi-cold night (40 degrees in Florida) and I start up my Max (2002 SE Majestic Blue 6 Speed). I put in reverse, and when I let off the clutch, I hear this horrible noise, like a warped rotor brushing up against the transmission. (Yes I know that rotors are in the brakes and not the transmission) So I don't think much of it, until it happens again and again night after night. So after figuring out that it only occurs when it's cold outside, I take it to the dealer. They look at it, hear the noise, and say "I think you need a new clutch". I'm like ??!@#!@. It's only got 4K miles on it. I don't drive it THAT bad. And I've only raced it 3 times. So today, I now have had 3 Max's, and 3 Service requests. Nissan is slipping on me.

ha ha

Mine is doing the same thing. I took it to the delaer today when it was happening. He was like, ohhh. I have an appointment at 8:00 to have the tranny taken apart. Lucky for me some engineer from Nissan is here this week and will be looking at it. Maybe I will get a chance to speak with him. I am sure I can drop some words for the group on what we think.

Clutch Noise

My car is already making an odd noise sometimes starting in first, but in no other gears. Is that squirrel sound you are talking about kind of like the sound power windows make when they rub against the rubber on the way down into the door frame? It also reminds me slightly of the sound that Airwolf made when it came over a hilltop, if anybody can remember that show. Am I having the same problem as the others or am I pioneering a new problem? I've never heard a dying squirrel, so I don't know if that's the right sound or not.

Yeah, I was actually making the same joke about Airwolf on my car last week. Funny you mention it. You ask if you have the same problem... well if it does it when you are letting out the clutch slowly then yes, you have the problem.

Steve - Yeah, the car is there now and they are pulling the tranny to see what is wrong. The service reps seems to think it is clutch and it will be covered. Don't know how they couldn't, and, I left the Frankentake in...

No way. I would take a malfunctioning manual over an auto any day.

I am starting to have more problems with second and third grinding when I shift. It only happens when it is cold, and I am pushing the clutch all the way to the floor. I only have 2500 miles on this thing so I am sure that it will develop into a larger problem down the road. I am not sure If I want to get it looked at yet. I almost think I would be better off waiting until they figure out what the root cause of the problem is with these things and fix it at the factory. No sense replacing it with something that will develop the same problem. Any opinions?

Well I got my car back. I had to go drive it for another tech but he said he knew what it was right away. Funny thing is he had never driven the new 2k2s yet. He said they didntk let them drive the new ones and he hasn;t had one come in yet that he had to drive.

He told me that he was ordering everything for the tranny (clutch, flywheel, etc). He isn't sure what all he will need to replace but it is all covered under warantee so oh well. He said it was the Throttle Bearing or Throw bearing (I couldn't understand him too well).

I will let you all know next tuesday after it is fixed what they replace.

I am just starting to have that problem with mine. It's only when i downshift to 3rd when i am slowing down that it does it. I have 30k on my car with the stock clutch. Clutch still feels like new though. Could just be something with nissan trans when they are cold.
