installed y pipe and smc sts today.....got a couple questions...

today i installed the y pipe and the sts, got some questions....

when i installed the sts, we did modify the heat shield, so it is scratching now, i will go back tomorrow and deal with the heat shield.... but i think the shifter is really stiff, is it supposed to be like that??? guess i will have to play around with it mre and see ho\w it goes...

and about the y pipe, i do find the car a lot louder and it is a lot deeper, but i really dont like the sound dunno why.... when just normal driving, it seems so have a shaky noise, i think it is what some people with the y pipe call bees in the can, i know why they call it that now, any cure for it??? if not i will just sell the y pipe, cuz i cant stand that noise.....

thanx for any advice

Which Y-pipe did you buy? If it's Stealin get used to the sound. The flex section makes that sound. Cattmans' doesn't make that sound or at least not as bad, due to the better quality flex section he changed to on his later gen Y-pipes.

The SMC STS will be that stiff for the first couple weeks, but it will loosen up. How short(high did you move the ball)? I have the top part of the ball covering the top thread(no threads show above the ball) on the shifter. You could go about half the ball diameter higher, but I've not heard of anyone going that high so I didn't want to have to uninstall it.

BTW, I didn't have to cut the heatshield. I just used 7-washers on each bolt to give enough clearance.

Let me know how the 4th or 5th to 3rd gear downshift is after you get used to it and it loosens up a bit.

Thanks.

I've heard the Cattman flex sections sometimes make noise, but I've heard both and the Stealins' is the only one I could hear it on. Anyways, I think the flex section quites down once it gets more use.

You might get under there and move the flex section around if you want to try and accelerate the process a little.

Please do keep me posted. Thanks.

The STS will stiffin up eventually... Just play with it everyday.. LoL..

Get some exhaust wrap and wrap it around the flex section.. It should minize or maybe eliminate that annoying sound...

Where'd you get the STS?

By the way, I don't notice my Cattman Y at all until WOT.

Did you try lowering/ removing the cross-member near the cat?

The Cattman makes the exhaust rub on that cross-member often. I took mine off. The sound was like grinding.

When you adjust the STS really low, you end up putting immense stress on the gear syncronizers. That's why the shifter feels so stiff, assuming the bottom of the STS isn't lodged up against the cat shield. When the shifter loosens up, it most likely means you've worn down the syncros a bit. I'd say the max you want to go with the STS is 1/2.

As for the Y-pipe, check all the gaskets AFTER the engine and exhaust pipes have sat overnight. Take your hand and put it near the gaskets on the y-pipe (manifold and cat gasket). You should not feel any heat coming out from the gasket. All the y-pipes (Cattman, Stillen, Warpspeed, Budget) should not sound any different at idle. At part throttle, the Y-pipe will be slightly more raspy, but you shouldn't really hear anything if the windows are up and the stereo is at a low volume. At WOT, the Y-pipes are a bit louder than stock. My Stillen pipe was loud, but my lined Warpspeed is VERY quiet. Double check that nothing from the y-pipe is hitting the underbody and check the gaskets. The "bees in a can" sounds shouldn't occur until you approach 4000+rpms.

Do have an sts on your ride? I was wondering how much it cut the throw when set at half? is it still worth it? do you still have to dent the heat shield?

I’ve had the cross-member off since September with no problems. (10,000 miles.)

Where’d you get the STS?

SMC will b stiff for about a month ... then either it loosens up or u get used to it .. I'm not sure which it is ...

y-pipe ... it's bees in the can .. i have it .. i'm used to it ... to get rid of it .. get some header wrap ... u can buy from performance improvements ... but it's really expensive there ... a lot cheaper in the US ..

i came back to TO yesterday 2 go to the ACC & watch the leafs kick Buffalo's butt ... back to Chicago tomorrow ...

re: hanger .. i have no idea .. i paid s/o 2 install mine ...
