why wasn't i able to catch up to a cavalier?

I was cruising on my way home when a cavalier passes by me...
probably going 20 over me.
I figured what the hell i jumped into the fast lane and started following him. Sudennly he floors. ( i wasn't looking for a race or anything...)

so i dropped into 3rd for a few seconds, then back into 4th and held 4th into redline... once i went into fifth i started slowly catching up. At which point a car was ahead. Once i saw his brake light go on. I slowed down and for the rest of the time drove regular speed.

I'm wondering now... why the hell didn't i catch up to him?
even if it was a z-24. I checked on carpoint. 140hp,180tq.

performance problem on my car? I did a search and i've only heard mention Throttle linkage cable.

my car has 85,000 miles on it.

i'm sure i should have been able to catch up to him.

When i switched lanes to follow him i was going about 120, or around 70 i believe, in miles...

I are sad now

I think there is now a turbo and supercharger kit available for the cavaliers. Ya never know what he could have under that hood....

The stock ones at work are limited at 110, so if you red lined 4th then he had something. . . And they are typically slow. . . We don't get Z24s though.

Dude, that's not nice. You like to insult people? Go join a honda forum. Mmmkay?

Anyways, I once got *OWNED* by a friggin' base model-lookin' gold Camry on the freeway, I'm talkin' tiny exhaust pipe, plastic hub caps on 15" steel rims, 4X4 ride height, etc....

The story: this guy flies by me, I catch up, we get about even at 80 and floor it. I sort of kept with him up to about... oh... 90. After that, he started pulling past me pretty quick, and when I was ready to shift into 5th, the dude was already 5 or 6 cars ahead of me.

Well it turned out the guy had a TRD supercharger. He even came over to the org to fill everyone in (he has a Maxima friend that saw me belly-aching about the loss).

Redline 4th-isn't that around 130? Cavaliers are limited so he had to have a chip or different ECU to pass the 107 or 110 limiter (I forget the exact speed). I take it this was a Z24 supercharged Cav? Who in their right mind would do taht to a base model? Maybe I'll go out and put a turbo on my Tercel.

check your ECU for codes, more specifically, the now famous knock sensor code. 0304. or something else could be loose...perhaps a loose hose, or maybe you have an exhaust leak. check it out, if all is well...THEN assume the cavalier had a turbo.

I had a 87 cavalier z24 before my max. I used to race my friends 93 se (auto) and took him everytime up to 60 mph, after that i started to run out of rpm's (mine was 3spd auto, topped out at like 90 lol). Those cars have alot of torque and launch very fast. If you saw theblue's video on shifting where he beats the IROC you'll see what I mean. They jump instantly, but die on top end. I dont know about the 5spds though. Some guy I talked to had a cam on it and could chirp third anytime, not too bad. Those were the old cavaliers anyways, 2.8's v6 (same that they put in older camaros). The 3.1's got slower. and the new ones just suck.

ok i think i figured it out...

my cousin mentionned to me how back in the day his friend
bought a new sunbird. it came with litterally nothing inside...
weighed only 2500 pounds about...
he was smoking alot of the faster cars out there. (after 2 small mods)

that car is the Pontiac sunbird.... 1988-1990 edition.

2.0L 165hp/175tq turbo.
I never thought this existed... dang!

my cousin mentionned that by removing a small filter near the front
and by tweaking something else... the car was blowing the doors off alot of muscle cars which used to just laugh at the car.

Anywho. This is my story and i'm sticking to it hehe

Those Cavaliers with the top dog engines are pretty fast. (Yes, I just said that a Cavalier is fast.....) I'm not kidding. I drove one once w/ the top engine and was blown away by how fast it was, I mean it really hauled A$$...... I was shocked....I was calling everyone I know to get them to come race me (and get smoked). Now I don't know about it being quicker than a manual Max, but I'm sure it would give an auto a run for the money. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but it's true, it really hauled a$$!!!!!

this is why you couldnt catch up to him

Cavaliers, sunfires and saturns all now have supercharger or turbo kits!!!!!!! so basically this will be the american civics, how do I know, I have this magazine and it shows and in the article it says that turbo or supercharger kits are now being made for these cars.

Re: why wasn't i able to catch up to a cavalier?

Redlining 4th gear may have been your problem. You should really shift out of 4th around 115 to 120 mph, I forget what rpm that it, though.
