Service Bulletin on Hood

Just had the dealer do the repair on my 2002 SE (Reference NTB02-005). The hood visibly vibrated before the work was done and now sits there rock solid even at 80+ MPH. Dealer had the car all day and said it was a pain in the exhaust to do.

What did they do to fix the problem? Did you have to pay for it, or was it a warranty fix?

See the sticky thread. Kev put the TSB number in there.
There is like 3 things
1) Misaligned hood check
2) Missing parts check (Headlamp packs and hood bumper stop
3) GLUEING the supports to the sheet metal.

Check it out. I have the parts on order (minus the glue) and will be performing myself once I get them.

Good keep ME posted!

I'm betting they would have blamed the 2K2 headlamps anyways.

Please do.

Check and see if they add the "headlamp packs"(rubber weather stripping that goes on top of the headlamps sealing the crack between the hood).

I sure hope that's all it takes and no GLUEING!

I noticed the hood fluttering the first month I got my car. Someone posted the TSB for this and I recall that there was some bonding required under the hood.

I'm afraid to take it to the dealer I got the car from as the last time I had some work done by them I got the car back and didn't realize there were scuff marks all over the hood. I managed to polish most of them out, but still this shouldn't have occurred. Maybe I'll go to another dealer nearby and see how they handle things.

And as sloppy as they have done work on my car. They hosed the whole door frame area with silicon to try and fix the wind whistle noise in my rear door. I could not even imagine how sloppy they would be with caulk like glue. I imagine I would be doing work and find glops of stuff where is should not be.

I had my car in once for 2 items...plastic noise in vent and window whistle. Due to damamge done to the car it has been back in the shop no less than 5 more times and close to 2 months waiting for parts and getting the parts replaced. The last time I just took the parts myself and installed. This last time the car was in isolation because he did not want to replace anymore parts. The Tech writer was nasty about the damage but the SM did his job, it came back immaculate this last time. Just wish it did not take so long.

I hear ya! That's why even though my hood shakes a bit at highway speeds I'm not taking it to the dealer. It's not worth the time nor the possibility of getting my car messed up. The CAUTION note in the TSB scared the hell out of me... "Take care not to dent the hood skin from the inside out". Nope, I'm not taking any chances...

I have a 2002 GLE and my hood was actually bouncing at high speeds on rough roads. I pulled over to see if the hood was unlatched and discovered that the hood latch and bumpers were very poorly adjusted. I cranked up the 2 black rubber bumpers at the corners to stop the bouncing until I could get it to the dealership. Also noticed that the two "points" on the hood were actually hitting the front bumper cover near the grille area. On one side the point on the hood hit hard enough to chip the paint.

When I took it to the dealership the service writer didn't believe me when I told him the hood was bouncing up and down a half inch. The tech knew about the TSB and ordered all the parts. I'm taking the car in next Friday to have it installed. As described to me, they install some bumpers on the front bumper that the hood will hit when closing, this saves the paint. The other part is to properly adjust the hood latch so the hood lines up with the fenders.

They used an adhesive to bond the sheet metal of the hood to the supports. Also added a gasket to the top of the headlight assembly.

No charge as it's a know service issue from the factory.

I found the TSB and am anxious to perform it, without the jittery hands of the dealer. http://12.233.210.59/tsb/hood_rattle.pdf

OK I did it myself

I did the TSB myself as my local service people are extremely incompetent.

I pulled the insulation by myself and checked all the support spars as described by the TSB. No looseness. Stupid the way they attach it anyway. Looks like large pieces of double sided sticky tape....duh! Nice engineering!

SO I installed the headlamp packs and hood rubber thingy last night but was unable to test. Today I tested. Its a wrap people. It fixed it. I took it all the way up to 125 and no vibration or fluttering. Total time to complete, as I always work slow to make sure I dont *ahem* something up was about 1 hour. All the parts were less than 20 bucks. Well worth the time and material in my book!

Going to add that to my "mod" list.

I'm EXTREMELY pleased those fixed it.

Send me those PICS so I know where to mount the "headlamp packs" and whatever "rubber thingy" your talking about.

Man I order something from Dave B. on a MONTHLY basis.

I sent them to that email address (work)last night...did you not get them? Let me know and Ill resend them. It was about 3.2 meg...it might have gotten stripped...

Hood thingy is a like a rubber stopper, but is sits behind the hood latch on the actual hood.

One thing to mention...make sure you have right side for right and left for left. There are extreme differences. I used part numbers but you can also tell because the "open" part of the pack faces the motor the smooth "closed" part face outward. That is really the only thing that could trip anyone up.

Where did you get the parts from for $20.00...

I called a local dealer and the parts were:

'glue' - $24.99
rubber bumper - $9.66
lamp packs - $12.04 for each side

I want to try this myself as well, but would like to know where to get the stuff the cheapest...

I know the predominant respones will be Dave B./Courtesy...but I wanted to know if you had a different source as well..

Here's what bothers me - my 2000 maxima is seeing the same hood vibration - and the TSB lists only 2001/2002 Of course, the knucklehead dealer blamed it on bumps in the road! What else!

2000 and 2001 hoods are identical...as well as 2002 (I think)...

short end of the story is just get the parts and do it yourself...

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=111137

Fast, cheap, and effective fix!!! No handyman challenge and you don't have to deal with dealer crap or be without your car all day just to get it back unfixed and with a load of BS from the service department...
