KYB GR2 Impressions?

As I'm on a bit of a budget, I don't have the moolah for AGX's. My goal is to match up something to H&Rs for my '97 SE.

As an alternative to the AGX, I'm considering (& researching) KYB's GR2. I've done a search but haven't much info on performance/value/durability/long-term issues/etc.

Any info that can be provided is much appreciated!

Thanks for the info! In addition, how many miles do you think you've racked up on them (or how long have they been on for)?

What are the GR2s like compared to stock? My stock ones have 86k on them and are too floaty, but I have no reference to know what they were like when new (I just got my 96 SE). I had AGXs on my '91 Infiniti G20 and they were on the edge of too hard.

the gr2s are a nice medium, hard enough to not let the car slam into anything when lowered but not like riding in a dump truck...ross

Hey, thanks for the info - sounds about my speed. And nice dump truck analogy!

How much are GR2s?

I hear that they are just great for softer springs like H&Rs and B&Gs, but may not be for stiffer ones.

I remember some people saying that AGX's on the softest setting are a bit stiffer than the GR2's, and GR2's are a bit stiffer than stock SE struts...

This is good info. I'll ask/e-mail KYB to see if they supply any numbers to reflect this. Anyone have any idea how manufacturers might actually measure the "strength" of shocks/struts? I know springs have a "spring rate" measure. Do shocks have a "shock rate"?

I had GR-2s on the rear (Koni's in the front). The GR-2s were fine with my 1.5" Suspension Techniques drop for 8K miles, but when I went to a full 2" drop with the Intrax springs, I blew the struts within 5K miles. The GR-2s are perfect for mild 1.4-1.6 drops, but anything more and they won't last. When these struts start to fail, the ride doesn't get bouncy, instead it gets harsh. When I took out my GR-2s (replaced with AGX), they would not return to full extension when dismounted. Where ever you left the strut rod is where it stayed (ie completely blown). KYB says the GR-2 is good to 1.5" drops, anything else and they won't warranty it. The GR-2 ride is slightly firmer than the SE struts and the design is much beefier. It's a very good strut for the money (assuming your drop isn't dramatic).

Stygianmax: I know I talked to you at the meet about these a bit, but mine have lasted over 30,000km on the same springs you have. Still rides like when I first had them installed.
