Need help putting everything back together after starter fix!

OK, I removed all the air hoses, MAF, etc. to get to the starter. Now I'm trying to put everything back together again, but I have one extra electrical connection that I can't figure where to connect! I don't have a place to post a photo (I can e-mail one if anyone can look at it), but I'll try to explain as best I can:

If I'm standing in front of the car looking at the area around the starter, there are three snap-on electrical connectors on wires right in front of the starter. They are bundled together. Two of them snap in right in front of the starter; it's quite obvious where these go. I can't figure out where the third (smaller) one plugs in! It's not a very long wire, so it can't be far, but I've poked and prodded everywhere around there, and I can't figure out where it goes. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of not carefully marking where everything goes, so I'm currently up a creek without a paddle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

connection

I just went and looked on my "99 and I think you are talking about a black wire with a white stripe. Is that correct? Anyway, there is an electrical connection for that wire directly below the air intake which goes to the grill at the front of the car. Try looking there and if you can't find it, report back with the color of the wire you are having trouble connecting.

No, I don't think that's it. The one I'm talking about is wrapped in black electrical tape and has a red plastic connector at the end. It's bundled with two other wires that have connectors on the ends. The wire is pretty short. This bundle of three wires is not even visible unless you remove the air intake/snorkel thing because they're right below it. I have taken a picture of this whole situation that I could e-mail to you, I just don't have a place on the web to post it.

Thanks,

-Pete

red cap

Could it be the conection to the Positive terminal of the battery that you are talking about? That has a red plastic connector and connects at the battery Positive terminal.

No, the wire I'm talking about is too short to stretch all the way up to the battery. Also, all the connectors on the red cap are being used, so there would be nowhere to plug this in. That's the frustrating thing; there should be an empty connector sitting right there near the starter, but I just can't find it.

BTW, my car is a '96 GXE, in case there are differences in electrical connections in the different model years.

the answer hope

On mine, the wire you have designated with a "?" connects to a connector which comes off the major wiring bundle which connects with the battery clamp to the Positive terminal. I hope that is what you are looking for. It would be hard to from above if it is hanging down.

Is there a plastic connector coming off the major wiring bundle that this wire plugs into? If so, what color is it? Also, is the connector attached to the vehicle somehow, or is it loosely dangling from the major wiring bundle?

Thanks,

-Pete

Dangling from the major bundle--about 11 inches down from the battery connection.

Hmmm, that's odd. I do have a connector branching off the main battery bundle about 11 inches down, but it's connected to the negative (black) wire of the starter. Unless there's another connector hidden under there, I don't see an available slot for my mystery wire. I've even looked with a mirror.

For more information, the mystery connector is composed of three individual wires: white/red stripe, white/blue stripe, and what appears to be white, although it could be faded yellow.

Am I asking for trouble if I try starting the car without this connector connected to anything?

Same here!

I changed my starter and I had an extra wire, I looked and couldn't find where it went, if it went anywhere. I just left it disconnected and my car is running fine. I don't know that for a test connection or something

What year and trim line is your Max? Mine is a '96 GXE, and I'm wondering if this is just for an option that my car doesn't have.
