If you have a '96, you might be able to get a full set of O2 sensors FREE including installation! I bought my '96 GXE last summer, and when I was trying to research its history, I found out that there had been a recall involving the O2 sensors at some point that had never been performed on this particular car. Last week I took it to the dealer, and even though a few years had passed since the original recall (I think), they replaced all the O2 sensors anyway at no charge. I'm not sure which model years were affected, but anybody who's thinking of replacing their O2 sensors should definitely check with their dealer to see if their car is eligible for this recall.

It will be interesting to see if it has any impact on my fuel economy. Lately I've been getting only 19-20 mpg with premium fuel, but that's with almost exclusively very short trips around town in the winter. I have noticed that my car is warming up a lot quicker now for some reason; I'm not sure if that's somehow related to the O2 sensors or if the dealer also switched out a thermostat or a temp sensor or something.

99 Maximas are slightly different. The front O2 sensor is mounted inside the exhuast manifold.

I bought a rear O2 sensor for my 95 GXE from these guys. You can talk to Aaron an excellent Guy with sufficient knowledge.Ihave had it in my car for the past one month without problems. They come with a 100000 mile warranty.
There was a recall on O2 sensors for the 95 and 96 maximas, Mine was replaced by the previous owner.
There are two types of rear O2 sensors, a big fat one by Bosch and sold at autozone and adv auto parts and a thin Titanium sensor.I had the titanium sensor in my car and it costs around 55-60 USD from these guys.Just tell him the kind of sensor you have before you place an order.
I had not posted as i have not seen a marked difference in my car's performance.

take care,
Jay

That's a good question. As far as I know, the Oxygen Sensors are not a regular preventative maintenance service item (like fuel filters, air filters, etc.). Nowhere in the owner's manual, the Factory Service Manual, Chilton's or Haynes does it say to replace these at any specified service interval. In fact, the ECU will give you a code when the O2 sensor needs replacing. So the reason why people change these 'just because' is beyond me. Could someone explain?

Most guys are just being pro-active. They replace them b/c they're old and may not perform as good as new. Since we want to get the most power out of our VQ, the ECU needs accurate readings from the O2s to produce the most power. So, we replace 'em. I replaced mine at 100K miles even though my ECU said they were A OK.

Of course, if there's something seriously wrong with you O2 sensors, your ECU will tell you thru the CEL.

SLC I30 says all they need is to be cleaned with carb cleaner. I'm trying this before I buy one.
