Calling Dan Martin: CVCV Valve works but still have CEL

evap CVCV works ok but still gets CEL

I have put wd-40 inside valve and put power to it and it works fine.
I get 12v from red wire on connector when key is on.
The valve works if I ground the the other lead on the valve using the red lead on connector as power. I checked the orange/blue back to the ECM and it doesn't have a short. (this is the other wire on the connector).

This is what I did before:
I got "Evap Control System" (07-05) and "Evap Canister Control Valve" on another error code (09-03). Been like this for over a year but the wife is bugging me.I have read a lot of the archives and they have been very helpful, especially Dan. I took down the canister on our 96 GLE and removed the valve. It was a little stuck so I did wd-40 and blew it out as well as worked it up and down a bit. I energized with 12v and it seems to work fine. It also doesn't leak when closed.

I cleared the codes after but they came right back.

I had someone pull the codes and I got a P0446 which I understand is definitly the CVCV.

to clarify

The valve works but it never comes on when connected properly to the harness. I have verified that the wiring is good and the connections are good. The only thing I don't know is what does the wire that goes back to the ECM do? It must serve as a ground to complete the circuit or the valve wouldn't operate.

Don't know what to do?

My book says that the valve should have 30 ohms across the terminals and I get about 12 ohms.

Any other suggestions? Can the ECM be bad? I'm not going to change it for this minor thing but I would like to fix this if possible.

thanks

There is TSB on your engine code, might want to get the dealer to reset the ECU in Learn mode, maybe this will clear the problem...

Dan...truely the man. Surely miss him.

But I had the same codes on my '97. Had to replace the valve in front of the canister. $80 at my local dealer. Try tustinnissan.com for less (mention maxima.org). Anyway mine was full of sand and crap. No problems now.

Do you have more info on the stored DTC codes?

I too have the same problem and the same trouble codes. I've also WD40'd the valve and blew threw it and ran all the tests, but I didn't know what the resistance through the coil was supposed to be since I don't have the FSM. To this day I still have the problem. I'll probably check mine when I get a chance later this week (you said 40 ohms right?). It could be the ECU is detecting that the valve is shorted open since there is so little resistance in the coil and thinking that there is a problem with the valve, even though the valve still works. From the sounds of it, some of the coils within the solenoid could be shorted.

I'm not sure it's the same part number, but I'll also try to measure the resistance on my friend's 2000 Maxima to see what he gets. Maybe he'll even let me 'borrow' the valve to help isolate the problem if it's compatible.

If you haven't heard from me by next week, send me an email to remind me to try this!

btw, mine is a 97 as well...

Hi. I too have this problem

Here is what happens. After I drive for more than 30 minutes (not on short trips) the check engine light turns on. It's always the same thing. Two codes.
3-4 : knock sensor.
and
9-3 : Evap canister vent control valve

How do I fix these?
Thanks.
