fair price for 1996 or 1997 maxima?

I have finaaly managed to save some money to buy my Maxima. I am looking at a 1996 GXE white, black leather interior, and some more goodies. It has 77000 miles and the dealer wants $13,900 for it. I offered 9800, and they are thinking about it. Also, i have found a 1997 SE black with cloth interior and 80000 miles for $8,300. They both drive about the same. My question to any member is this, is the white 1996 too high at 13,900, Was the 9800 a good counter offer? second,if i get the SE 1997, how much will i have to pay for a leather kit for the seats? any feedback will be appreciated.

get the 97 se, if you dont you will regret it down the road. and you can get in the group deal in the org the two tone leather is like 540ish range. deadline may 31. the 97 has cleaner lookin steering wheel which im tryin to get in mine. and trunk and front bumper headlights, corners, fogs , all look better. well good luck in your decision. later.......

Looks are subjective, but here is my opinion.

I always thought the 95-96 had the best looking front end, it is alot cleaner and more flush. The driving/fogs look exceptioanlly great on the 95-96 also. Plus the cornering lamps worked and the 95-96 headlamps were high quality glass units. in 97-99 there are no cornering lamps and the clear headlamps are plastic. Plus, in 97 the Max was garnered with more emissions crap, so the 95-96 actually do perform a bit better.

I agree the rear on the 97-99 look best, but the nose on the 95-96 is just more attractive. The 97-99 clear headlamps will go on a 95-96 if you want that look, and the rear all you have to do is put a 97-99 trunk lid on and buy thje 97-99 tail lamps. It is all up to you.

Get a 97'. They are safer than the 95-96 models, safety wise.

Safer? what do you mean? how about the price? Is $9800.00 a reasonable offer for the '96? The dealer has called me twice today asking me to go down and assure them of my offer. I am tempted to tell them $9,800.00 including tax. Is that unreasonable? What do you guys think?

77K miles, $9800(incl tax), leather, go for it. Being it is a GXE w/leather, does it have Bose and Auto climate control? Are you sure it is not a GLE? I wonder what the theory is with Leather on a GXE when it is standard on a GLE. Check the V.I.N with carfax.com to be sure you arent getting a reconditioned maxima, or see if the dealer will disclose the last owner of it. I never buy used without knowing and speaking to the previous owners. Words to be wise.
