Very intersting discovery with my old tranny
Very intersting discovery with my old tranny
First off let me bring everyone up to speed on my recent maintenance.
Well my tranny finally gave way about a week ago, had 1st and reverse only. I also had a brand new nissan tranny with LSD in the garage waiting on my old one to give out. Got it put in with new axles and everthing fit fine. Also got my flywheel resurfaced, clutch disc replaced, Red Line MT-90 from the start and replaced the rear main seal. Also got some poly swaybar bushings put in as well. My first drive with the car was a little rough, but after 700 miles it is now smooth as silk again. The new bushings in the front made a huge difference in the handling of the car, but the biggest difference i could tell is that with the lsd instead of my car fading to the outside of a turn it pulls even harder to the inside once it looses traction. This thing is wonderful. Got my first drive in the rain today, noticed absolutly no wheel hop when i took off earlier today like and before the bushings i had mad wheel hop in the rain if i punch it. Also coming up a hill with a slight right hand turn in my neighborhood while it's raining, I normally lose all traction and dirft off to the left, now with the LSD it's like having traction control even though the car was sliding a little to the left the LSD compensated and pulled the car more to the right through the turn. Overall very pleased with the new front setup.
Now after all that I made a very intersting discovery with my old tranny, I went to the garage and took it apart this afternoon, looking for a chiped tooth on a gear or the bearings just completly fried. To my suprise every gear and syncro looked fine. Except for one thing, the main shaft on the transmission is what holds the syncros for the gears I assume from looking, and it was completly broke in half!! I will take some pictures to give everone a better look and idea, but how the hell is something like this suppost to happen? Anyone who has seen the inside of the tranny will know what part i am refering to. The main differential gear I belive is the one to the far left in the middle is the main cluster gear, the piece i am talking about is to the right. Any one have any ideas? or pictures of an open 5 speed tranny? but I will get pictures tomorrow and post them

What kind of LSD did you get? Quaiffe? My car came with LSD installed from the factory, I guess I dont appreciate it enough. I've never driven with out it, but it sounds like it the best thing you've installed into your car.

I don't know what part of the transmission you are talking about, but I would be interested to know. It seems like most guys either have their transmission go out on them between 60-80k or have the bearing failures. Either way let us see those pictures
http://www.motorvate.ca has lots of pictures of the transmission, but I'm not sure what part you are referring to so I don't know if he has a picture of it.

but look at the set of gears to the far Left on each of these pictures

if you look at this one down toward the bottom right below the control arm
thing there is where it broke off
I had mine replaced at 57k. They cracked the housing when replacing a seal. So when they went to order a new tranny housing, they couldn't get a single line numbe for the part. So they ordered a new tranny, LSD, all of it. he he he For once lady luck was looking down on me with a smile instead of a dagger.

Did I hear transmission problem? Anyway the pics arent working. You say the polyurethane SWAY bar bushings eliminated the wheel hop?
