Incredibly bad gas mileage! You won't believe it! help

Hey guys,

I've been keeping track of my gas mileage for the past 3 months and have come to the conclusion that on average i will do 350 kilometers per 57 liter tank using 91 octane or 89 octane. Is this normal? If not what can i do to help. I noticed my check engine light is on, also i like to gun it every now and then. But 350? Can't be right..and no, no one is stealing my gas. Thanks

is a 57 liter tank the same as the standard US tank?...i'm too lazy to find my conversion tables...if so, i get about 330 miles per ~15 gallons of fill-up...about 21-23 mpg most of the time...mix of city and highway, more city though

Do us a favor and figure out how many MILES PER GALLON you are getting. The miles-per-tank "figure" means nothing. The kilometers per tank means less.

Handy INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Fill your car up until you can hear gas in the filler tube.

2) Set your trip odometer to 0 or write down your mileage.

3) Drive until your fuel light comes on or until you're on EMPTY.

4) Fill your tank again until you hear gas coming up the filler tube.

5) Note exactly how many gallons you just put in.

6) Note how many miles you've driven.

7) Divide #6 by #5.

8) Post the answer and then we'll have something to say.

Also if you really want to see what your car is getting. After step#1, drive very carfully and don't rev the car over 2500. Keep highway speeds to under 75mph. Do this for the WHOLE TANK.

First of all, don't use 89 octane. Your engine no like. Second of all, gunning it will eat up a bit of gas, but probably not a big deal.

Thirdly, I'm too lazy to do any conversions so I'll wait for someone else to tell you if your gas mileage is really all that bad.

Please convert that to MPG& GALLONS.

Ok, so your MPG: 217.5 miles / 15.06 gals = 14.44 mpg.
I'd still recommend the above methods for a better measurement but assuming you get 350kms from full tank to warning light, your MPG does indeed suck. I'm just a newbie so I'll leave the solution to the experts.

Yeah, why do people talk about mileage in terms of Miles per tank? What does that tell you? One of my friends fills his tank up at the 50% mark, and I fill it up at 80% gone. People really are stupid sometimes....

Damn, thats about what I got this tank, seems like my norm. Usually I get a little better, 260 miles on 14-15 gallons. I gun it a lot (bad driving habit I know), so I guess I'm asking for it, but it still seems low.

Am I the only one who saw this?

You should pull the codes from your ECU, then see what the problem is. Have fun

Whoa. Where'd that come from...?

All I remember reading in the original post was about gunning it. Oh, well. Just shows how oblivious I am.

To add my $0.02... 14 1/2 mpg is really bad. Even consistently gunning it I get around 19...

Also, here's the link with a how-to on getting the ecu code. Let us know what you find: Here's the link.

Definately pull the ECU codes! Also, check your air filter (the DIRTY side) and tire pressure. When was the last time you changed the plugs? You might want to check for dragging brakes also.

what year is your car? In my manual it says 93 only. Use 89 in emergenccys. I posted last week how my gas mileage drastically increased when my dad changed my fuel filter!

Should I be happy that I get around 30 on the highway, 70mph cruise on?

Though I do get about 15 in the city
