jwt intake and maf sensor
jwt intake and maf sensor
just spoke with a local mechanic and he said
he had to replace the maf on his jetta
cause he put in a air intake similar to
the jwt pop charger that i have.
somehow oil from the filter element
corrupted the maf and he had to replace the $500 unit.
anybody experience this same problem?
maybe the foam filter type is better?
i've had the jwt pop charger on for over a year and
just recently cleaned and reoiled it, so i'm kinda concerned.
thanks in advance for any advice.

Overoiling a filter will cause the oil to come off and coat the filiment of the MAF sensor which will cause it to read poorly. Its a common mistake

thanks for the reply.
i guess i'd know pretty quick if there's
a problem. should i just re-clean
and lightly re-oil the filter element?
have you ever heard of anybody having to
actually replace the unit?

many ppl here have had problems with their MAF being damaged due to the oil and some have tried to clean the sensor with throttle body spray but I dont know if that worked ot not. run a search like " MAF sensor" or "K&N oil problems"
I browsed one of the VW sites before. They seem to lose MAFs often. I think it's more because VW still doesn't have quality control down pat like us Nissans
My car has had a K&N filter, 1st a panel for a short while, then CAI now, for about 100,000 miles. I cleaned my MAF about a month ago. A little dirty, but then, considering that my MAF was not cleaned for nearly 80,000 miles, it was expected. No biggie. K&N and me are cool.
Lookup VWs on consumer reports. Plenty of negative reliability, even their newer 97-01 Jettas and Passats. If you lookup Nissans on CR, you'll see that the Maxima and Altima are one of the better, more reliable cars.
Nothing like Nissan. Fast, fun, AND reliable.

I'm using Amsoil's 2 Stage panel air filter (foam filter with oil). I used regular paper filters since new to 87K miles Before I made the switch I checked the MAF screen and it was clean as a whistle. After 3K miles with the Amsoil filter the MAF screen is covered with black stuff. Seems like dirty MAF screens are unavoidable with oiled filter?
Yeah, that's what I had too. A faint film of black carbon. Touched it with my fingers and it came right off. Went over it with a brush and it it was pristine.
If I get a chance, I'll look at it again.

Its not the filter, you are supposed to put small coats on and evne like mentioned, now have oil dripping off the filter...think of it when it was new, almsot no oil on it, and then peopel go and put a ton of it on and wonder why they need new maf's...
