Strut bearing replaced !
Strut bearing replaced !
I finally replaced the strut bearings and the boots on my 95 GXE.
I wasen't really a piece of cake but was worth the effort!
Here are some things which i felt is worth sharing with you all,
1.If you are doing it for the first time, you'll need a lot of patience and stay calm.Have the Haynes manual handy.
2.as soon as you remove the strut assy from your car, clean it using a good engine degreaser and wash it off with a garden hose.
3.Take some paint and match mark the positions of the spring etc.
4.THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED BUT I HAD TO DO THIS AS I DIDN'T HAVE AIR TOOLS. The centre nut is hard to remove once the strut assy is off the car. So i loosened the centre nut by 2 turns and then removed the assy from the car.It is dangerous but i had no way out.
5.The springs are to be compressed to the MAXIMUM extent possible for easy removal and installation of the bearings.
The rest is as usual.Take care and be careful

Take the strut assembly out, compress the springs safely.
It's very easy to loosen the center strut nut by just using a long piece of metal (i.e. a breaker bar handle) braced and wedged between one of the three strut mounting bolts and the center part of the strut housing. That way the top won't turn. Also don't point it at your head while doing this...
