RE: Window Regulator vs. Motor

Tried the search of course but need some more help.

Can someone quickly tell me what the window regulator is vs. the window motor? And what each part does?

I have a window that I hear the motor running but no action. HOwever, the other day, when hitting the button, I heard a grinding noise and hte window moved up an inch or so...but now is not working.

But hte motor is still running.

Thanks guys.

If you still hear the motor turning than it is your regulator which actually controls the window going up and down. I don't know about the 4th gens but I had to replace 3 of them on my 90 GXE. Things break and the metal wire get bound around the pulley, not too hard to replace. I am sure there is a write up somewhere on here. Do another search specifically for regulator replacement and you should find it.

REgulator is something that holds the cable that winds your window up and down. Basically your motor drives the regulator. It's almost like a winch or pulley if you will.

This one of those questions that has been answered on the board 100 times, most of the old timers won't bother to answer any more. This is usually when the dreaded search recomendation comes along. Have to get someone who is bored at work to take the time to post an answer.

Re: Re: RE: Window Regulator vs. Motor

I don't necesarily agree that it is the regulator. Mine did the same thing about a year ago. The motor was still buzzing so i thought it was the regulator. I changed it, but it didn't help. I ended up having to change out the motor. The motor can be bought at O'reilly autoparts. much cheaper than the dealer. if you replace the motor, go ahead and replace the regulator while you're in there because it's a common wear and tear item.

That motor is expensive costs as much as the stater itself(i think $ 218).The regulator runs around 79 bucks.I replaced the regulator 8 months ago, it's doin' Ok now.try used parts thay run around 80-90$ for motor and regulator. The ******* dealer quoted $65 diagnostics+$300 parts+120labour.

take care

Actually, i got my motor at O'reilly for about $130 after core deposit. But yea - the dealer was about to gouge me on such a simple fix so i decided to become a DIY..

well, you can always tell if it is the regulator: just see if the cable is still attached to the arm that holds the window, if it is broken, the cable will be free to move without the window.
