IMPORTANT! Question for those who have had their MAF go out!!

I am having some car trouble and I took the car to my local nissan dealership and well needless to say they are officially the biggest group of morons in the world today! They told me that they didn't know what to tell me and that they couldn't help me?!?!?! So I then went to Speedee Oil and Tune up and the mechanic their said that his guess would be that the MAF sensor might have gone out. I need to know what you car was acting like before I spend the money to get a new MAF, so that I can be sure that this is what the problem is. I don't have a check engine light! And the car just feels like it is not wanting to go, or not getting enough fuel or something. I don't know it is really hard to explain. At first I thought that it was a vacuum line but I have checked all of them and they seem fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

From what I have read about MAF going bad or being installed incorrectly (I.E. backwards) the car will accelerate to about 2K or 2.5K and then choke and die. It will not rev and will not maintain a constant idle. Thats all the info I have. Watch your tach as you drive to see if you get something that matches this.

Have you change your airbox to something aftermarket lately or at all? I can walk you through a semi-tear down and if you have a DVM you can get readings from teh MAF sensor and I will cross check (give to you in advance) the ESM.

Good Luck!

I tore down the engine compartment to get everything chromed and then all of the problems started as soon as I put everything back together.

The car goes to about 2k or so and that is it, sometimes not even that high. And then after holding there for about 3-5 minutes it will release, shift gears and the car will take off. I don't understand it. I also don't have any of the things that you mentioned in the post above.

I really need some help, I don't have any mechanics that know anything about this car around me and I am scheduled to be at a car show in a week and a half where I am supposed to be featured for a magazine. So I really need to get the car fixed.

HELP

IF you tore out your airbox assembly, you could have installed the MAF backwards. There is an airflow arrow on it, make sure it points TOWARDS the Throttle body.

But the symptoms you are describing do point to the MAF. Are you throwing a CEL?

Also, depending on how far down your tore everything, a vacuum tube could be mis-installed.

Give me a good idea of what all you pulled out and how far you tore stuff down.

I have already checked the maf direction and it was correct, and as far as how much did I tear down. Well every bolt and bracket that is visible in the engine bay was taken and chrome plated. My first thought was that it could have been a vacuum line installed wrong but I have checked it, my dealership said they check it, and three of my friends looked over it and we all think that it is done correctly. I have gotten a price on a new maf and guess that I will try that. Also as far as codes thrown with the cel, the only one is a map/barometric sensor that has been on ever since I installed the place racing cai about a year and a half ago.

Make sure the spring loaded connector is seated correctly. Otherwise without a DVM and no CEL codes I would make the assumption that your MAF is done.

Sounds like a simple vacuum leak...
