ok, found trans along with everything else i needed in canada BUT they say the car was burnt in inside and they can't FIND OUT how much miles the trans had but they say it has 4 month warranty and they also say the trans is tested on this thing in this special shop in some city so it's guaranteed to work and all...they can't tell how much mileage it has on it but they were selling trans seperate for 600 bucks...i'm getting a price on everything together BUT i need to know if this is a good idea to get...it does have a warranty longer than other places (4 months compared to average 30 to 90 days) so it seems guaranteed...they also can't tell off hand if it's locking or non locking but they say they can tell me what it is before they ship it to me (just gonna make something up i suppose) but i'm not too picky about that....my main concern is that it will last...their computer has no data on the trans.....
THE LAST PROBLEM is that they say it costs 300 dollars cause of freight and other bull crap to ship it from canada to NJ....he was listing all these expenses and all i can do was say okay okay okay...he was a nice guy but wow, he said i could probably talk to UPS or something about different shipping things or something. Does anybody in Canada or states know how i can go around this heavy shipping cost...like is there a way i can have ups get it for me and be cheaper or something? someone help me out please!!!!

As far as milage goes, see if they can get the VIN number, and you should roughly be able to get the milage on the vehicle, at least to the last time it was registered. As far as shipping goes, you are getting ripped off. I'm paying $50.00 (not missing any zeros) to have mine shipped to WA, so somethings up with there shipping cost. They said I'll probably have to pay some border fee, but thats only $50-80, so not too much more, certainly not $500! Good luck.

If you're gonna drive up here (8-10hrs each way, if in the Toronto area), you might as well make it the Memorial Day weekend(not a holiday in Canada) and get the 5speed (including VLSD, right???) installed by the people you're buying it from, too.
I may have missed your post regarding what you plan on doing with the "automagic". You may be able to sell it to the folks you're buying the 5speed from - if you plan on getting it installed in Canada.
You'll save the $300 in shipping & border fees(not to mention the government paperwork) plus, you could pick up an extra $200 or more from your auto.
The added bonuses are that you get to drive your new 5-speed sooner and you can go back to the people who sold it to you if there are any problems -(no potential "it's the installer's fault" vs. "they sold you a POS transmission" arguments). You'll also be able to see what you're getting and who you're dealing with before you part with your hard-earned cash.
Plus, you'll be able to check out some clubs, restaurants - whatever- that you've never seen before AND pay for your gas, hotel and food(not including lunch w/Jime) and have a little $$$ left over, with the money you saved.
Just my $0.325 cents (= $0.02US

I would use a donor car from a local junkyard. You will not get all the parts needed from a car that's thousands of miles away. Good luck on the project and I hope you have another car to get to work.
