Had my hood and front bumper repainted. Got my Max back and it has overspray on the top and trunk lid. You can feel it with your hand. Wondering if a clay bar would smooth it out.

Actually I had the hood, bumper and two front fenders. I think it was about $900.00.

Clay is PERFECT for that. Go for it.

Clay Bar

I had a G20 once with an overspray, and hardwater spot damage. I tried literally every product I had ever used, including some abrasives recommended by local body shops. None completely removed either problem. When I read about clay, I decided to give it a try. Removed both problems, with only fingertip pressure. This is by far the most gentle way to keep your paint free of contaminants. I would recommend you try it without reservation. You'll be amazed at how slick the paint will feel after use. Another upside is it is quicker to use than the abrasive mixtures. I do my whole car at leat once a year. The Zaino is a better clay than the Mequiar's (which leaves traces on clay on the surface under some conditions). Zaino recommends using their car wash solution diluted in a spray bottle, which makes it much cheaper to use. (BTW, the Zaino products, in each product category, are superior to anything else I have used. When I got a complete complement of the Zaino line, I gave away all my other products to a friend). Have fun with the clay.

The clay bar is one of the best things I have ever done to my car. Keep in mind my car is black and it shows everything. I used the Meguiars clay bar followed by their pure polish followed by mother's pure carnuba liquid wax. Lets just say that was the best my car ever looked. It almost looked showroom. Too bad I don't have time to do it more often.

Zaino clay?

is the best to use? I was wondering--does it come in a bar form or liquid? I have never used it, but have just gone with the polish, then canaruba wax on th car. The wax I put on it three or four weeks ago is still there. I can feel the eax when I touch the car.

I was just wondering--what is the procedure for using clay on the paint...
would it harm the clear coat?

thanks...

clay bar

One day I noticed little brown flecks all over the paint on my car. They were really tiny and you could hardly notice them unless you got up close. It looked like rust, and a friend from a body shop said it looked like someone did some sandblasting near my car, got iron filings on the paint, and they rusted. This was covered by multiple layers of wax, etc...

I did everything to clean it and it didn't work. I used the Mothers California Gold Clay Bar kit and it worked great. The finish was like new when I was done. Really, if you try it I bet you'll want to do your whole car with it.

I've used both Meguiar's and Zaino. Meguiar's left some of the clay behind sometimes, which had to be rubbed off with a dry cloth. The Zaino does not do this. However, the Zaino is a little harder to buy, while many places now have the Meguiars, including WalMart. They are about the same price ($20). Go to Zainobros.com for a complete description of how to use the bar. Basically, you rub the clay bar back and forth across the paint, while lubricating with either a detailing spray in the case of Meguiar's, or with a water and car wash solution in the case of the Zaino. Definitely recommended for clearcoat; the most gentle way to clean your paint IMHO.

Griots Garage

Actually, I use clay on my car every time I detail
it. There's a place called Griot's garage that caters
to the high end auto bunch (you know, the guys who
only wipe their car with a diaper and don't drive it)
that sells a "paint cleaning clay" and a product called
Speed Shine. I have used it on my Maxima, GMC truck, and
the new Yukon XL (wifes vehicle). It takes some time
after a complete wash, but the results are amazing.
I also use their fine scratch remover and their best
of show wax.

IMHO, this is the BEST way to keep your car looking
sharp, even if it is a daily driver!

Their hand cleaner is top notch as well...

I also used the Mothers California Gold Clay Bar kit. It works very well and you shouldn't have any fears of messing up the paint. Just be sure and follow the directions on the product packaging.
