NEW under $10 MOD

Many have asked for a mod to make the alarm beep (NOT honk)
when the alarm goes on. I've always wanted this so I don't
have to twist my neck while walking away.

Here it is, and under $10 too...

alarm beep

chimes

hi Mad Dhan,

Chimes might break the $10 budget...

But seriously, the "buzzer" sounds just like
one of the "beeps" you hear inside the stock
car (when you leave the keys in and open the door
or something like that). Sounds stock (there's a
wav file on the mod page for you to hear before
purchase)

thanks,
rob

sounds good, it does sound like as if i left my lights on - chime. Is it loud enough tho to hear say from like 20 ft?

It would be cool tho if u could do Nokia ring tones type of deal, just for show, not for actual use.

Great idea, great writeup. I too, find it annoying to have to look over my shoulder while walking away,

-although I'm thankful Nissan didn't rig the horn to beep when the alarm is armed - that would annoy me WAY more.

Thanks Rob, great idea, I am printing it out to put in my rainy day job file.
Makes it easier to find your car if its lost too without setting off the panic alarm.

Jim

PS When you are my age you lose your car more frequently. Also, your schematic drawing resembles the ones I draw, but it works.

Since it uses a relay, couldn't you use virtually any 12 volt powered noise maker?

I have a friend who tore the viper alarm out of his car. If I wanted to go through the trouble... couldn't I use whatever they use to make it "beep". I like the regular car alarm sounds (as opposed to the horn). If you could isolate that circuit and remove it from the rest of the "Viper Alarm" then there is no reason I could think of, that it wouldn't work.

Nice write up.

I listened to the wav link. Maybe I've got a bad connection or something, but it doesn't sound like the chime that goes off when your door is open and the key is still in the ignition. It sounds like a REALLY faint squeak. I had my speakers all the way up. If this is the sound, I don't really see myself being able to hear it half the time. Nice write up!

To Piggy back off of Entropy. Do you think it would be possible to use another 12v chime? Do they come in something louder or more unique.

Early this year I did exactly the same thing with a buzzer from Radio Shack. Didn't sound nice and loud enough. Then I unpluged one of the front horns and wired it to the trunck relay and the loud sound scared me. So I put everything back.

I like the sound that most Toyotas/Lexus make when their alarms are turned on. I'll check how much that device costs.

chimes 2

1. maybe the 99 "key in" beep is different than other years, either way, doesn't really matter since you have the wav of what it sounds like.

2. yes, you can use anything that takes 12v, just make sure the relay and the fuse will handle it. Radio Hack sells many sizes of relays and buzzers so have fun.

Good stuff kid! Also, great write up. I just finished installing mine now. I bought the parts last night. Almost sounds like the stock Toyota/Lexus alarm chime. Thank you!

Would the buzzer go off when the alarm is tripped? I don't think it would. Looks like you are tapping into the flashing system when arming the oem alarm. I wonder how the OEM alarm is sounding the horn. What I like to do is bypassing the horn part and wire it to an aftermarket siren.

I got the piezo buzzer from Radio Shack the same as need4speed recommended and it sound great. A while ago I just picked one buzzer, didn't even look at its frequency. Now I know it's about 500 Hz. The new one is about 3800 Hz which sounds close (a little higher) to my RX300.

I just tried connecting it to the trunk relay without the additional relay, and it worked fine. I don't think the extra 5 mA piezo current will affect anything. I'll finish it this weekend.

Great work

I have been wanting this for a long time but did not know how to approach it. It works great but its not very loud if you are in front of the car. I will probably buy another buzzer and mount it in the front of the car also.

To those who think this is to hard, its not! It took 30 minutes and I am really slow. Also like jiaxima96 said you dont need the relay, just splice into the power and ground like it shows and mount the buzzer and your done!

You could search http://www.radioshack.com/category.a...3%5F000&Page=1 for a different piezo buzzer. 273-060 sounds very good with trunk lid open. It may sound a little weak when lid closed. It's 85 dB. If you get a 95 dB it may be enough.

Would all the ones on that link work fine without a relay? (I'm lazy and have two wiretaps left)

This one looks good: 95db - 3200mhz - $7

Well some have much larger current, and maybe better to have a seperate relay to have its own current path. The one you got a link is only 7 mA that should be of no problem. Actually I like it better than the one I got for two reasons: it's louder, and its frequency should be closer to my RX300's.

BTW my local Radio Shack told me to keep the receipt. If it doesn't work the way I'd like, return and get another one.

I just got done installing this mod. I was not sure about it after listening to the wav file, but I figured if it worked I could always look for a better buzzer. I think it sounds great. It was a little harder to install than I thought it would be because you have to solder the connections on the relay. If it could be installed w/o the relay it would only take a few minutes. It is definitely worth it.

I returned the 85 dB one and got the 95 dB buzzer. It sounds about the same but with $3 more. I'll go back and return this one and buy two 85 dB buzzer, either putthem all in trunk, or one somewhere in the front.

buzzers

yah, I parked near a construction area during lunch yesterday and it was definitely too soft to hear, so I went to RS and bought a 106db version. When I tried it on the battery, I almost jumped back out of fright... Anyways, RS took it back without a problem. If anyone finds a better buzzer, please post the part number and where you got it.

As for why the relay, the bcm pulls the line to ground. Too much current and kiss your bcm goodbye. Being $4 bucks and a little solder is cheap insurance.

Jayanth,
I noticed you never bothered to share your experience. Does it have anything to do with this sort of install, or was your misfortune due to something else? If it involves this Mod, I WANNA KNOW ABOUT IT! Fill us in.

Re: buzzers

Oh OK, even with 7ma? So do you have to solder it to the relay? I don't have a soldering iron... Can't we just use connectors?

Why would you want to add a chirp? I like the "stealth" effect of having just a visual cue of the alarm being armed. Beeping is just a way of letting any would-be thief know that "Hey! I've left my car, I'm going now... bye!!"

True, but most of us with factory alarms aren't really big theft targets compared to you heavily modded guys, who should have a "real" alarm system anyway... I'm just paranoid about leaving my doors unlocked and hate turning my head every time... Plus it makes it easier to find the car if you ever have to in a parking lot...

Just get in the habit of pressing that nice big button on your remote when you step away from the car, and let the alarm system do the rest. Been working flawlessly for almost 8 years. :-)

Whenever I manage to forget where my car is, I just hit the panic button and set off the alarm. Nice and loud, I find it in an instant. Try using that instead of your new chirp, and see the difference.
