need help removing ash tray

I'm following the .org's intructions under the shoptalk section on how to put in a pop out tray compartment. I got to unscrewing the trim....I removed the shifter trim, the left screw around where the tray is, and the electrical white box on the ash tray. Now I'm trying to get to the screw holding the trim in on the right side behind the ash tray. It seems to come out some on the left side but wants to stay in on the right. Anyone done this or have a clue?

Thanks - Chad

Console removal

Whew... thought I lost this link. Here's an excellent write-up on how to disassemble the 4th gen dash.

http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalNisMax2.htm

Good luck, and don't pull too hard on anything. Finding spare plastic trim pieces for the 4th gen is a chore.

Regards,
TOM

This write up is excellent and helped me very much. Although popping out the top piece with the vents and the clock is very hard. Remember to pull DOWN and TOWARD YOU and repeat that in reverse when you reinstall. I nearly broke the plastic pieces that hold in that part of the console when I reinstalled because I kept pushing down on them. They need to go in horizontally.

Tricks I use to take out 4th Gen Radio

To get out ash tray:
After taking out screw to the left of tray, pop the clip on the right as best as possible, then OPEN the ashtray. It comes out easy after that.

To get the Radio/Heater controls etc. out:
Remove two screws at bottom. Using a panel tool, pop the left and right sides of the blank panel just below the radio/hazards/defroster. Pop them up, releasing clips. To get the last two clips at top, slide panel tool in directly above one of the vents, where the vent meets the dash, and pull on that side. Or, sometimes you can just put the panel tool directly between the vents in the middle and pull it out in one quick shot. I have done about 40 Max's or so using this technique without and problems. It make seem hard to pull out the vents, sometimes you just need to pull harder. Once the bottom clips are out you won't break anything by pulling.

Hope this helps.
