Ambient Temp Sensor & A/C Problems
Ambient Temp Sensor & A/C Problems
Yes, I searched and found ****. Well My air conditioning is not funcioning so I brought it in and the guy said that my compressor wasn't kicking on so I needed to bring it back when I had more time so he could test it @ $80 an hour. Well first of all, the dual pressure switch had a harness coming out of it with one wire just ripped out, so that could be a problem. Second of all, my ambient temperature switch is not working...it is stuck at -22 degrees even when its summer...So I took out my trusty Chilton's and looked for the temperature sensor....well I couldn't find it. From the pictures and what people have said in the forums, it sould be right in between the horns which are right under the hood latch. well i looked there and sure enough, nothing is there. there are some holes in the metal bar that runs from the hood latch down to the bumper but nothing is there. This would explain why my ambient temp reads a steady -22 degrees, and could also be why my compressor is not kicking in (at least thats what I read in another post) So if you guys are still with me, please help me out! Am I looking in the wrong spot for the temp sensor? Am I right on this sensor causing the A/C problems (well, at least part of the problem)? And if the guy I bought this 92 GXE max from changed the high bridge to 134A from a R12 system....what is the usual "inevitable leak" time...aka how much time before it all leaks through the R12 hoses? Thanks for your help!
Re: Ambient Temp Sensor & A/C Problems
If you have climate controle you can do sensor test
Dual switch if its not correct wired compressor magnetic clutch
will not work.
Ambient temp.switch is located between the horns.
If its not working no com clutch
If you change from 12 to 134 you have to change the reciever dryer,
maybe you can see if its new.
Press the presspoint of the service higpressure valve if any gas
escapes if not there is no gas and you might have a leak in the
system.
Make a wire bridge on the the connector to the dual switch and
see if the clutch is working (its the midle part of the comp.
pulley thats starts running than)
If not make a bridge also for the abient switch.
If clutch is running ,just for very little time because when no
gas in the system you compressor wil go xxxx !
To fill up the system with gas and oil you have to go to the dealer.
Hope this will help you a little.

Just forget for a moment what i said about the sensor test.
Look at the rest what i said about your ac problems.
i will send you this week some info to your mailbox how to
do some test.

I'm trying to bring this thread back because it's getting even hotter and I still have no A/C. I am almost positive that my car DOES NOT have an ambient temperature sensor. It is just not there, someone must have ripped it off or something. I know that this sensor and the A/C are linked to eachother so I am probably just going to run to a junkyard and grab one for $5. I need to know where this sensor hooks up to the system. I know the sensor is places in between the horns but I can't even find a wire that runs there. My ambient temperature is reading -22 degrees no matter where I am so I am pretty sure the thing is just gone. Once I get that sensor is it easier to test my a/c? Also, the guy I bought the car did the 134A switch and when I took it in the mechanic said that since the hoses are made for R12 and I put 134A in there, the stuff would leak out but he wasn't sure how fast. How many other people have done this conversion and how long has the Freon lasted? Also, are there any ways to test the compressor, condensor, etc, without taking it in to a shop, so I can be sure that the system works? Possibly with no charge. Help!

Uuuuh, what year do you have? The 93 and later came standard with R134a. In regards to testing you'll have to take it somewhere and let them do a diagnostic on it. I would take it back to the A-hole that put 134 on top of R-12!!!The two are NOT compatible. Says it right on a can of 134.

I think I am going to a junkyard today to take an ambient sensor off of a car. Where is this illustrious sensor connected to. I know the actual sensor is inbetween the horns, but where is the wire that connects the sensor? Does anyone know even a little bit about this sensor?

There is a cannister on the drivers side (?) near the grille w/ a connector attached to it. I was told that the cannister had something to do with the humidity control of the A/C and that mine may be oversaturated. I haven't investigated this yet, but check it out and let me know.
