Let's just hope the guy at the parts store never drives a car near you.
that is a BAD idea. you can use it for a general indication of how thick of a spacer you need, but don't drive on them. jsut stack some washers on there and bolt up a wheel to see if it'll fit or not. then go buy the correct spacers and do it safely.

Do I need spacers with that size tire? What size spacer without having to change the studs can I do?

I am getting ready to throw the z wheels on my car too and you will need at least an 1/8 spacer for 225 tires. 215 will fit fine without but not 225.

Some Z info from my car:

Don't skip out and use washers. Washers will push the rim out, but the stud is still the same lenght. Get a quality spacer like H/R which is 1. Hub centric, and 2. Comes with new, longer studs.

I'm "Eibached" and I think its makes it a tighter fit than a non-lowered 3rd gen(from what other z rim owners have said".

To fit the front I used the 5mm H/R spacer. I *may* have fit without it, but it was VREY close.

The rear I used 15mm spacers. It would absolutely NOT fit without spacers. Even with the 15mm its close, but the wheel obviously doesn't ever move closer to the strut.

Some advice. I'd get 225/50's since your getting new tires. The price difference can't be too much. Come on, you've got a full 7.5 inches of with. The 97-99 Max's have 6.5 inch rims with 215's. The 225 fits so great on the 7.5 inch rim. And let me tell you, you will love that setup. I can throw this car around like a civic, and it may still lean(I need some rsb work) its sticks like crazy. I literally don't think I've ever heard the tires screech, well, once.

Summary: Get 225/50's (use some summer tires)
Use 5mm spacers up front.
Use 15mm spacers in the rear.

Here is what you have to look forward to:

i test fitted my friends NA 300zx rims..w/o spacers, in the front, fit fine, no problems at all..in the rear, even with spacers, the tires still contacted the strut assembly. 225/50's..i have 3/8"spacers in the rear, and 235's on my 17x8s fit fine..
jon, i can get you some Z rims for like $250 w/tires if you dont already have some/looking at some for a higher price..

Now remember NA and twin turbo rims are differant. I don't see why I need 5mm in the front and 15mm in the back with the NA rims. Where can I get H/R spacers? This place near me wants $30 for a pair of spacers, Is this pricey.

NA Z rims are all 7.5"
turbo Z rims have a pair that are 7.5 and a pair that are 8.5. The spacers Mike listed above will work for NA rims. use his research and you'll be done. Mike spent quite a bit of time working in it getting his right. It would be rude to argue with a man who did the research himself when you're still having to ask questions about whether washers will work for spacers or not.

LOL, you guys are too funny, and that smiley face is nasty!

Yep, I've got the n/a rims. I wouldn't even want to think about fitting the 8.5 back there. There really is no point for a width that big on a Maxima.

No with a 15mm spacer did you need longer studds. Whats the most mm spacer can I use without gatting longer studds. Also how is the H/R spacers.

don't go longer than about 1/4" before getting new studs.
the thicker H&R spacers (past about 10mm) come with new studs in them. H&R are probably the best ones you can find.

And Mike... the TTZ rims will fit just fine- if you put the wide ones up front

i was able to run

a 255 series in the front and a 225 in the rear with a 3 mm spacer, but on import front wheel drive cars it is not recomended to go over 3 mm, you then start to run out of space on the stud
