5sp swap(or 6sp)

my 88 max is an auto. the trans is new and got a shift kit and if you push a button and pull up ond turn the shifter you can manually shift the gears. all the work was done at Hocus Pocus in Houston before i bought the car. the car will spin the front wheels when it swaps in to second automatically, but I WANT A 5sp. is this a common swap? can i get a six speed out of a newer car like a hundai tiberan or a pontiac vibe, or the new SE-R??

You could swap the auto out with a five speed, but it would cost a lot of money to do it. Also, if you ever plan on turboing your car, the five speed can't handle the HP the engine would produce, you'd have to stick with the auto.

As for what type of tranny to install, you'd have to stick with a Nissan one. You can't mate trannies from different companies to a Nissan engine. Hell, a lot of Nissan trannies won't work, you'd have to get one from the 2nd through 4th gen Maximas to ensure compatibility. There may be a few other Nissan trannies that would work, I'm not sure and I don't know of anyone who has done this swap.

Re: 5sp swap(or 6sp)

Hey if you are still in houston you need a good higher stall convertor. This will allow you to pull harder from a stop and since you got a shift kit a 5spd swap won't help much. I still have my protorque high stall convertor from my 87 maxima. Drop me an email at nismo87@houston.rr.com if interested. BTW I'd like to see your car if your still in houston.

Tell ya what, you don't want that shifter kit, why don't you sell it to me? Hopefully they upgraded your transmission as well...join the 2nd Generation Maxima club on Yahoo! and post some pics of your car, I'm anxious to see your tribal Supra taillights.
