Anyone have a sleepy temp guage?......

Ok....about a year and a half back I swapped out my 93gxe guages for the 89-91 se's. The look great and all went perfect. However, as of late, my temp guage is only working ~75% of the time. I've noticed it getting worse. It was always fine, then one day on the highway I cought it drop to C and then back to the middle in a flash. Now today it was on C and wouldn't move, but if I hit the dashboard it pops right up.

Is it wishful thinking to think that I have a loose connection or is this how the guage breaks? I wonder if the temp and gas piece can be bought seperate? I might upgrade to a 92-94 piece so I get my o/d light back.

Try cleaning the connections on both temperature sensors.

If he hits the dash and the gauge starts working again, you can logically rule out anything under the hood.

LOL my car did that for awhile

i dont know if your gauges had the same problem ( i used to take my apart a lot) try using a screw driver handle and "tap" the gauge needle back onto the pin, it could be that its probably loose or came loose over time. that was my problem

Nope, mine did that exact thing for a while and after cleaning and replacing everything I finally realized it was the temp guage. You are going to have to get a new temp/fuel guage. They come as one unit. Got mine from courtesy nissan for about $100.

Lazy Temp Gauge

I've had the same problem for a year or so now. I've replaced the sending unit but it didn't help. The post about replacing the guage for $100 sounds like the best advice... just haven't wanted to take the dash out of the car.

If you have to smack your dash to make the guage come back to life then it is the guage itself. Nothing under the hood. The guage stays open and closed sometimes, and smacking the dash opens the connection back. Trust me I did evenything trying to fix that damn guage. Your just going to have to buy the new guage.

Here's a thought

If you still have the original gauges that came with your car, plug them back in. If your temp gauge works like it normally should, then you know the problem is in the gauge or gauge cluster.

You know.....I hate to sound like a *****, but I *KNOW* the problem is in the guage itself. Thats why I said if I tap the dash, it goes back to normal. It works about 80% of the time, but other times it just falls to C. The whole point of this tread was to see if others have had a loose connection and that fixed it OR if the guage unit(temp and fuel) should be replaced.

Fromt the answers, I think I need a new guage unit.

Mine is acting really strange also. After the engine warms up, the temp needle will shoot up to almost hot and sometimes fluctuate from there. This will happen only when I'm not moving. When I'm moving, the needle is about centered. This is somewhat higher than normal also.

Now, as I'm sitting there idling, if I turn the fan and/or turn on the lights, the needle will shoot all the way up! Turn them off and it will drop to under hot, but not back to normal.

I did notice my fuel gauge bottom out (way down low)the other day also when the tank was almost empty. After I turned the engine off and restarted, it went back to normal.

I guess this sounds like the gauges also. I haven't taken them out yet to see if there are any parts that can be replaced.
