I'm Getting a Turbo for my Max
Hey Guys,
In about two weeks, my max will be turbocharged. I have a s15 stock silvia turbo that I am going to put in my max. My friend works at a shop and knew someone from japan that wrecked his s15 so it worked out in my favor. Yes the guy's fine, funny thing is he only put six miles on the turbo. Yep got it off the lot and crashed it. We're going to fit the turbo with a Spearco intercooler, blow off valve, Custom down pipes, fuel regulator, fuel pump, Greddy turbo timer, and all the guages. Stillen Sway bar will be put on as well. Cars already lowered but I'm thinking about dropping the front another inch. What do you guys think? Feasible... My bud says it can be done. I'm post the results when i get everything set up
98 Max/ Short throw shifter, Eibach/tokico, Fstb, Borla Exhaust, K&N intake, and sooon a Silvia Turbo

I don't know if this applies to turbos(It does to Superchargers) but is this a roots type boost system, or a higher spool one? And, you do know there already is a pre-made turbo kit available for us Maximas, dont you?

Yep I know, but I'm getting all this done for about $1500.00 for everything. I got the silvia Turbo for free. It's stock silvia turbo so i know i'll be running about 12 psi with a good set up. How much does the premade kit cost? My friend's also helping me install it for free. We're getting all of our parts from Charisma in CA. My boy used to work there but still has an account. So turboed for $1500.00 I'll take that any day.

Man you got the MEGA hookups. The stage 1 premade kit is $3500 non-intercooled. And that is without labor to put it together. Is it gonna be intercooled? 12 psi? I hope you plan on building up your engine becuase that's alot of boost!
I say for $1500 you are a VERY lucky man.
Good luck!
Re: I'm Getting a Turbo for my Max
Get the silvia injectors too. Then get a cartech or vortech FMU.
S14 SR20DET: T-28, 60 trim 60 mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing,
62 trim 53.8mm T-25 turbine. .64 A/R turbine housing.
Ball bearing center section.
S15 SR20DET: Same as S14, but with Inco turbine wheel (instead of
GMR), cast divider wall between turbine discharge and
wastegate.
GTi-R T-28 is a really good turbo. I think that it is better if you lose
the T-3 compressor housing and get a housing off of the S14. This is a big
improvment. With the T-04B compressor housing, the GTi-R turbo can support
about 16 psi and 280+ wheel hp. Makes pretty good boost by 3500 RPM, too.

Eternity, i'm asking the same question as Craig Mack: are you gonna build up the engine at all? cuz 12 psi is ALOT of boost for our high-compression engines. you got an amazing deal, though. with the money you'll be saving, i would check into a rebuild.
Re: Turbo might be too small
What did you just type??
Anyhoo, that T28 might be a tad small but anything it will reach peak boost much too soon. Considering you can't boost too high on a stock VQ, it might match up well. But off hand a T3 is better matched to a 3.0 liter V6.

Also if a stock Silvia runs at 12 psi at the same turbine speed your car will have less boost because there is more cylinder volume to fill. I just doesn't seem like that turbo can flow enough exhaust through its stock housing.
Good luck getting your turbo kit together, I would be surprised if you could actually do it for $1500.

Yeah I live in northern Va. I should be getting everything done in about two to three weeks. Just got a promotion at my job so, I won't have that much time to put everything together. I will look into the injectors. I think my bud did say something about upgrading my injectors. There is a rack of things that I'm getting. Just too much to list. My bud just bored out my engine and manifolds. For some reason or another, my third gear was lagging. Well I'll post results when everythings in.

I don't think i'm going to build up my engine but I will be running with all my guages and a greddy turbo timer. I shouldn't have problem. I already talk to my bud and he said a 10.1 compression ratio should take 6 psi to 12 psi perfectly fine. What do you guys think. I know that it would be safer to build up my engine but hey, a new reason or excuse to try and get a 2002 motor if my engine blows. haha I hope it will never comes down to that. What do you guys recommend for my engine build up?

What do you guys recommend for my engine build up?
1) Drop the compression so you can boost more. I believe this is done by getting a thicker gasket. Unfourtunately, you'll have to get it made. I think the VQ30DET gaskets will fit and drop your compression to like 9:1 or 9.5:1. I think dished pistons will also lower compression.
2) Titanium valve springs: don't have clue where in God's green earth to get them for the max...never really looked
3) injectors and pump: not really engine, but definately needed.
4) i'm assuming you are a five speed: act clutch and perhaps a Quaife or VLSD tranny
5) if you're auto, rebuild is a must. tranny cooloer (Hayden 404) with upgraded valve bodies
again, this are just things i've gathered from reading on the board. check it out.
Tilley is testing interest in Valve springs i believe... his thread is in the GD forum, I know of someone who has custom cams... might be interested in selling the blueprints...
easy way is like Romeo said-find VQ30DET internals from Japan swap em in-its hard to find VQ30DETs though well for cheap hehe
good luck! and make sure you take the time and spend the money to do it right the first thing...
how are you planning to route the intercooler? relocate battery? use CAI hole?
make sure to heat wrap everything
and I like the way everyone didnt flame him hehe a nice change!

once you do your project you can call Jim Wolf Tech maybe they'd be willing to reprogram ur ECU for about 800 I think... he probably wont unless u've already pretty much done the turbo install and need a new ECU
