Could ECU possibly be damaged??

I have a 1995 5 speed gxe. I just installed a uprd upgraded ecu a couple of days ago. After installing my idle changed drastically poportional to the turns of the IAC valve screw. When my old ecu was in there there really wasnt much of a change from open all the way to closed all the way. Now that I have the uprd in I'm getting a check engine light. Could it be that my old ecu was damaged and the uprd ecu is actually picking up something?? I dont know what the codes are but I had erased the codes and they came back on. Please someone help with this.

Get the codes from the engine check light, and then encode it and see what the problem is......
