Is there anyway to tell if the dealership actually replaced the timing belt???
Is there anyway to tell if the dealership actually replaced the timing belt???
Hey Guys,
Sorry for the length, but please read...
I recently had a fairly good size coolant leak coming from underneath the largest pulley on the bottom of the front side of the engine. It ,however, would only leak when the car was cold, so I assumed that it was the water pump. The Nissan dealership said that was what they thought as well, so I preceeded to have them change the pump and while they were at it the timing belt. The only thing is, I just felt that I was getting screwed, they finished really fast, and when I asked to see the old pump, surprise!! the trash had just been taken out. I leaned into the dumpster and looked as good as I could, and saw no pump. My question is, is there any way for me to tell if they actually changed this stuff, or if they just added some kind of stop leak stuff?

Well, I would look around the water pump seal, and the silicon gasket, if it looks new then it was probably replaced. If it was leaking from the seal, then it would probably be pretty decayed looking. It could have also been leaking out of the weap hole, but that usually happens when it is hot or cold. If it was the seal, they could have screwed you by just replacing the seal and cleaning the water pump while charging you for a new water pump.
I've never really been to a nissan dealer for a repair, just to buy some parts.
Do they give you a warranty on the labor and parts? If they give a warranty on the parts, I wouldn't worry about it, if anything happens it's their ****..or so i would hope.

I doubt it they give a 60,000 mile warranty. It's probablt more of a 12 month/12,000 mile and your old timing belt that they didn't replace could only last 1000 miles after the warranty is up, and then you'd be screwed unless you could prove they didn't change it. I wouldn't worry about it, especially with a dealer, they may charge a lot but they get parts at cost and don't normally screw people that bad. If it really bothers you, then take the t-belt cover off and see for yourself.

Yes, they did give a 12 month/ 12,000 mile warranty, but my timing belt didint really need replacing, it was done 45k miles ago, i just did it cause it was no extra labor from changing the pump. I'll try to crawl under the car and look at the seal today. Thanks guys!
