When it is cold like 30 degrees outside in the morning I am noticing a raw fuel smell when it is warming up....really bad. I am inclined to think that the fuel/air mix is way too rich due to the cold temp of the air......has anyone else had this problem? If so, what should I do to remedy the problem.....

thx

Same thing here...

just happened today.
My guess is the fuel lines.
They tend to crack in this cold weather. The age of the lines doesn't help either.

That's because (most likely) the o-rings on your fuel injectors and the rubber hoses on your fuel lines are beginning to wear out and developing cracks..

the parts aren't really expensive, (dunno about labor) but it IS a serious problem that needs to be fixed ASAP.. you've got raw fuel leaking onto the top of your engine.. could cause a major engine fire.
I've heard of people replacing the o-rings and fuel lines themselves, but I would only do that if you're comfotrable tearing apart your fuel rail. it's not for the casual DIY'er.

Fuel injector

Just took my Max to the mechanic today because the water pump blew and I have been getting that same smell here in Cincy where the high is somewhere around 32 degrees. (I need a CAI so bad) I asked my mechanic about the fuel smell and he said Nissan had a known problem with fuel injectors leaking and he said he would check it out. Funny thing is that I could actually see the gas flowing off of the engine one day when I was checking under the hood. It kinda freaked me out. Anyways, I'm rambling so I'll shut up.

Recall for '87-'88

I had an '87 GXE about 4 years ago, and it fell under a Nissan Factory recall, replacing all under-hood fuel lines and wire harnesses (about a $1200 deal), all for free. The only gas leak that I had at the time was the fuel pressure regulator. Before I knew about the recall, I replaced that and it fixed the problem. I might be worth checking out.

Fuel Smell

I have the same problem, but I found out what it was. It was the where one of the fuel hoses connect right under where the sparkplug wires plug in the foront of the engine.

That's it exactly!

There's a rubber fuel line coming up to the front metal fuel rail that sends the fuel straight to the injectors. Mine did the same thing a month ago and I watched the metal are become saturated with raw gas right after I started up the car. I grabbed the rubber fuel line and wiggled it a bit and it hasn't done it since. I also went down the entire fuel line system with my mighty philips screw driver and tightened every single clamp on the rubber hoses. All my hoses are in good shape, but after years of vibrations, those clamps can work their way loose- tighten them.

I am getting that, too

A few weeks ago, I began to notice this problem, but initially blew it off because I thought it was another car.
Over time, the smell has gotten worse and I was starting to get concerned.
Thanks to this thread, I know what action I have to take and will be on the horn to Kelly Nissan to get this problem resolved immediately.

In the meantime, I am going to drop a little something on you. I found a full list of recalls for our beloved GenIIIs located at http://www.alldata.com/TSB/944117_en.html

I just checked the above URL and all those recalls? Does this mean that I can take my car to a Nissan Shop and get these things repaired for free??

I don't think that those 90 lines are recalls, just suggested maintainance and repair guidelines. I am, however interested in the wheel recall; what the *fudge* is up with that?

I believe it was actually the wheel studs, but I'm not completely sure.
most cars were already fixed before they left the dealer, if not they should have been fixed years ago.
my car has a sticker on the inside of the hood saying it has been done.

they aren't all recalls...just the wheel thing and the corrosion repair...the long list is a list of tsb's which just list known issues but have yet to become recalls...
