My wife and I were on our way to Oxnard from San Diego tonight. I was in the fast lane at ~70, all of a sudden there was an early 90's Civic doing a 360 in front of me. It came all the way from the #2 lane (crossed 3 lanes) and was sideways when it found it's way into my lane. I stood on the brakes, released when I felt them lock and the car slide, missed the car by inches as it slid into the center divide. I made a few more minor adjustments and managed to slip by unscathed. The Civic hit the wall HARD, ended up on two wheels resting on the wall. The driver was shaken up but seemed ok. As I started to leave the scene I noticed two things. My new(less than two weeks old) tires are flat spotted. AND, in first (it's an auto) things dont' feel right. It revs fine, but lags. It sounds like it's stressing to move. So, something is up. It feels, sounds and acts funky. It seemed ok after I got up to speed, but I'm concerned and confused. What could standing on my brakes have to do with my tranny acting up? The sudden stop? Any clues?

 

I sincerely hope there is nothing wrong with your tranny. Keep this in mind though. If your traveling at 70MPH, wheels spinning fast, everything in the tranny is humming along, gears spinning ect.... Suddenly you lock em up. Everything in that slush box comes to a screaming instant hault. Thats quite a jolt.

Let your car sit over night and cool down. Check the tranny fluid and make sure everything is ok. Check for leaks at the drive shafts as well. See how it behaves over the next few days. If things don't seem right, have a tranny shop take a look at it. They might be able to catch something before it winds up costing you big bucks.

Well, no leaks, no drips, no problems. At least not that I could find. Seems to running normal and smooth again. I'll probably take it in anyway.

Too bad the tires don't fix up the same as the tranny.

cbock There is nothing to worry about your tranny is fine... You said you slamed on the brakes? Well what your transmission did was went into safe lock mode.... what that is , is it locks it self in 3rd gear and wont come out, thats why u feel slugish off the linge... dont worry about it it, u can read about it in your manual...it will tell you all about it, all you have o do is reset your ecu, turn on the car then off, and back on and it should be rest... the reason the tranny dose this incase your doing 360s, and your in 1st 2nd and its changing gears as your going back words you can really **** it up...its no bigy, do what i told you and you should be fine.... glad to help
