Lets just say that you were going to get rid of your Maxima.....

Yeah, just for arguments sake, lets say that you sold your Maxima or perhaps never bought it. Lets just go ahead and say the Maxima does not exist. So your in the market for a sport car in the $25K to $30K price range. What would you say about these choices?
*E36 (previous gen/95-99) BMW M3
*'03 CL-S 6spd (oh no.....here we go )
*Toyota MR2 Spyder
*previous gen MR2 (yeah, the turbos )
*new A4 quattro 1.8t
*Subaru WRX

Just wanted to get some feeback, and hopefully with any luck avoid a CL-S vs Max war (remember the Max does not exist in this realm)

Oh man, that is a nice choice of vehicles. However, I would wait for the evo 7 to come out and see what that car entails.

350z. This is a beautiful car that will assuredly run the 1/4 mile in mid to high 13s. 287hp/276?tq. And best of all its a Nissan

IMO, 'being a Nissan' would be the worst part about it.

You mentioned the MR2, but you forgot the Supra TT, RX-7 TT, 3000GT VR4 Spyder, used S4.

From your list, I'd go with the M3. But if I could go out of that list, I'd save up a bit longer and go with the 350Z.

E36 M3 would be a great bang for the buck, plus there's pretty decent aftermarket support for it... plus, ///M's rule!!!

I agree with big bad jon! E36 M3 with mods is untouchable! Those cars rock, but I like the body style on a M3 better than the M5. Screw the WRX that car sucks unless you plan on doing some rally racing.

Or wait for the new Impreza STi, or Lancer Evo VII.

I'm thinking either M3 or MR2 turbo. The MR2's are hard to find in good condition though.

Okay, after some more in depth reading, the MR2 looks to be too big of a risk, so let me revise the list.
*Acura CL-S 6spd
*Lexus IS300 5spd
*E36 M3 coupe 5spd
*maybe, just maybe if the price is right, a G35 sedan

I know everyone raves about the G35, but it would probably be the most expensive by far out of all these. I'll have to check. Maybe there will be more discounting in August.

Go with an M3.
It's fast out the box. You can mod it like crazy. And you can find them in good condition at good prices. Plus it's rear wheel drive.

Save up a few K more and buy a 2003 SVT Cobra. You said a sports car, and your list doesn't really have any, except for maybe the MR2. Or buy a used Cobra R, throw a couple parts at it, and go beat up on poor Z06's.

He said between 25-30. MSRP on a Performance Trim 350Z is a bit over $30 I believe. Not too much saving. Would add like $2.73 to his car payment.

Seriously I would probably wait for the G35 with the manual. Unless you don't mind two doors in which case I would get the coupe or the 350Z. The more I hear about the Z the more I regret cancelling my preorder.

Maximus, I like most of your choices, but an IS300 cmon... what are you thinking. SLOW.... Everything else on your list is reasonably fast. Though the IS300 looks pretty nice.

I would wait for the G35 Coupe. We all know the M3 is kick a$$ but for $50k one can save a heap of dough with the G.
BEST of all it's a NISSAN product.

I'd go with an M3 as well. A new 350z would be a VERY close second, though.

I think...

you should open your own car lot and just have all those cars, so you can just drive which ever you want that day. Ultimately thats what would really make you happy.. A new car a day

I'd come up with 32000 thousand, and buy a 2000 BMW M Roadster (w/about 20K miles), NOT the Z3 (God forbid!), and have one hell of a quality (not to mention quick) car for the money.

That blue and black are my favorite colors on the M3. So sweet.

I would shoot for the "03" Cobra any day. I might even sell the max for it now!

Mini Cooper S

If I didn't need a full size car (and if I didn't do so many really long road trips) I'd seriously consider a mini cooper S, and get into Solo II...

You laugh now, but wait 'till the aftermarket guys get to it...

I'd also hope that the new GTO will live up to it's promise. I've wanted a Holden ever since I saw mad max.

I would put the G35 on top and keep the same order you have here.
As far as the E36 I know it a sweet ride, but I can't see myself paying the same priced for a used car when I can get a brand new car that's just as nice. I'm an accountant, so I know you lose money when with depreciation and what not when you buy a new car vs used. But if I'm spending in the 30ish range, I'm getting what I want the way I want it. Especially when buying a sports car that you know somebody else problem drove into ground.

I'm with you on this one!!! Put my name down yesterday for a Cooper S, 397th on the list!!!! As soon as a Cooper S is available for me, my Maxima is going bye bye! BTW, getting the Union Jack on the roof! Every option you can imagine, with 17" wheels topped out at $27K MSRP.

From your list, I'd say M3. My boss just sold his '96 M3 w/12k miles and $5k custom stereo for $24k I think. It was in PERFECT shape. Not a dent, scratch, water spot, stain or anything. It was perfect - well what would you expect from a 7 year old car with only 12k miles?

At the risk of breaking away from the others....

'96 Impala SS (Gimme da 2 stage NOS!! )
'87 Grand National/GNX (See Impala)
'00 F-150 Lightning (See Impala)

Then I have to get something like an M5 or E55 AMG.
