DO 18's REALLY KILL YOUR QUARTER MILE????
I just went to LACR last night and my best time was 16.1, and I have a 5spd. I went to LACR's website and they said to multiply your 1/4 mile time by .96 to correct the time to be at sea level, which would mean i ran a 15.4 but with 18's!! If i switched back to the stock 15's, you guys think that it would make THAT big of a difference??? Cause my 18's are like 35 lbs each!! They are the "niche shocks". All input appreciated.

sheesh me too then! I guess I should run my stocks and that would take a half a second off. Hmm that would mean I would be in the 14 for sure.

Buy a pair of some 15" SSF wheels with M/T slicks for the track and you'll be set. Those should take off about .5+ seconds (because you'll have great traction too) and run you maybe $1300 all said and done.

Re: Re: DO 18's REALLY KILL YOUR QUARTER MILE????
My best times are always on my stock 16"
They are around 3/10ths faster than the 17" and they weigh 23.5lbs. compared to 19lbs(Stock).
So I would Imagine you would get a whole lot better time (maybe 7/10ths if yours are 18" and they weigh 35lbs) if you drop 15 lbs a wheel.

nah, that mumbo jumbo about bigger wheels being slower is hearsay.

ive ran @ lacr the nite b4, and then ran @ fontana the next day. my times were eactly off by this much. and it wasnt just my time, it was my friends times too.
Which wheel/tire combo would be better?
Hypothetically speaking, if you had a 15" wheel/tire combo that weighs 35 lbs and a 17" wheel/tire combo that also weighs 35 lbs, which combo would give you the best 1/4 mile times?

If you compare two wheels of same dia, similar construction, same weight, one with 17" rim and low-profile tire, and the other with a 15" rim and more tire, the 17 is slower since more mass is concentrated further from the axle. But this isn't the full story - a 17 is usually slower yet since the overall wheel weight goes up, too.
So the tradeoff is basically this: low profile tire/big rim gives you a much stiffer wheel which helps in autocross but doesn't accelerate as quickly. Small wheel / more tire gives you faster acceleration but handles like a dragster.

Yeah right when I put my 18s on i noticed a difference in off the line speed. Those things are heavy. Places where I would normally roll in neutral I would just sit.
