Maxima v. 3 Series?

I know a 5 series or anything like an M3 would beat a maxima, but don't you think a 4th gen could take a bmw 3 series? I plan to find out .. my max is stock right now but im about to add the cold air intake .. and my friend has been talkin up all this crap about his 3 series. His is a 330i .. automatic transmission. We shall see, but what do you guys think?

Watch out >>>>>

the 330i is conservatively rated at 225 crank HP but probably makes more like 240. Yes the car is heavier than the Maxima but BMW's are geared very well, even the automatics, a lot better than the Maxima.

BMW's tend to be quicker than their horsepower numbers suggest. A 330i automatic can very easily do 0-60 in well under 7 seconds, something a 4th gen has difficulty unless you have a 5-spd.

I do have a 5 speed .. edmunds.com (dont know how reliable it is) lists my car as 0-60 in 6.9 and the beemer in 6.7 . With the little bit of added hp from an cold air intake, i dont see why i couldnt beat him .. especially in his automatic.

Ive raced a lot of BMWs and the max is only threatened by m3/5 and the 540. I dont know about the new 330s..havnt had a chance to race it.

98 5 Speed exhaust + intake + suspension GXE

a 330, in stick runs a quarter mile in the low 14s, 14.3 if i remember corrently, and automatic 330 should be in the lower 15s, your maxima 5speed, should run a low 15 as well, wiht the cold air intake your car may hit the high high 14s,

but all he has to do, is hit the gas, u have to make sure you get a good launch, regardless it should be a close race.

Dude, you are gonna get worked. I'm sorry, but as someone else mentioned, BMW's are geared perfectly, are consistently quicker than the specs indicate, and have awesome aero. Manual or auto (Steptronic), the Bimmer is a superior car. Not to mention it has a weight transfer advantage because of the RWD and most likely has a better power to weight ratio.

A cold air intake is gonna net you maybe, what 15 FWHP MAX? That's not gonna be enought to take the BMW, especially if the guy behind the wheel knows anything about his car...

Good luck anyway.

Not necessarily. For example, 525i, 528i and maybe 530i could be beaten by a maxima.
Just race your friend and see what the outcome is. Some people here didn't have a problem putting a few car lengths on a 330i. Maybe you'll be one of them.

I don't think he's trying to say you get 15 HP from an intake but just the best possible dream scenario, he would get that but even if he could, it still wouldn't be enough. I think he'd be lucky to take a 328i, BMWs are just geared a lot more precisely than a Maxima. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

The 4th Gens and early 5th Gens are best paired with the 325i. It is normally a close race, but from my experience the Maxima is faster. The 330i is a different game though, it is more like the later 5th Gens in terms of speed. But since you are a 5spd, you have a good chance. It will be close, but if you can shift well and launch well you should win.
