Removing resonator on '98
Removing resonator on '98
How much will the exhaust sound change if I just remove the resonator from the 98 stock exhaust and replace it with straight pipe? How does that compare sound-wise with leaving the stock resonator and b pipe and installing a Magnaflow muffler or something like that?

im pretty sure it gets pretty loud, well a noticable difference, but beware of losing low end power (torque as some call it incorrectly)...

So, I'm getting the picture that this is a generally bad idea to take the resonator out - loss of low end power/torque? Would the increased noise level be under the seats or out the back of the car, since the resonator is under the seats?

Here's my question... does more air flow = more noise?

Darn, thats why I'm so slow gotta put that back on. Should I put the cat back in too instead of the one with the straight pipe through it?

peels all over the b-pipe it will have the same effect as a resonator
and then put the banana in the tail-pipe to help increase your lost
back pressure. This should easily help you see those much sought
after 12s.
It's okay, no need to thank me - I'm here to help.
Is the resonator straight through, or does it have baffles inside? If it is straight through, will it really make that much difference in low-end power? Will the factory muffler drone on the highway with it removed?

I'd like to get a sound similar to the Lumina Euro's or Bonneville SSE from the early 90's - like a burbling/powerboat sound. Will removing the resonator/leaving stock muffler make it as loud as those cars?

Also I removed my resonator, and did not feel a loss of low end torque.
Has anyone who removed the resonator had a problem with exhaust leaking under the car? How do they keep the fumes out when the pipe is installed? Also, is it a better idea to replace res. with a complete B-pipe instead of having them do all that welding?
has anyone who has actually done this reply please, and those who say that you loose power, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU? explain your reasoning or prove it using a dyno, otherwise "I think, you'll loose power..." statements are useless. a resonator is there to do what??? RESONATE, so it makes the car quieter, but how would that effect power, if anything it should give you power because the air flow is smooth through the pipe instead of bouncing the airflow in the resonator
P.S. and also, unless you have timeslips and dyno I don't want to hear I feel the car is slower/faster, I personally think the car is faster when I fill it up w/ gas, I know it's not true but it just FEELS faster

I had a Greddy Catback installed on my car...the top end power was great...but it got too loud. I got tired of the resonating sound at 2500 RPMs. So, I installed a stock muffler. I felt a power loss at the top end of my RPMs, but it felt like I could accelerate quicker...
The saga of the Stillin B pipe
Last year I had Stllen install their SST "B" pipe and SST Muffler in my 96. At first I thought the difference in noise was neat, max was barking nice..grrrr!.... at the muffler, but inside the cabin with that drone at around 2400RPM......highway speed wouldn't you know in 5th. I finally had to install the stock resonator back in the "B".....now I hear the K&N intake more than the drone....it's a bit quieter inside. But to quiet it down even more inside.......a baffled muffler is required. So I'm livin with it at the current noise levels.

Hey,
The sound of the exhaust will barely change. I've taken out my resonator when I went to have my rusted stock exhaust replaced. Not putting in a resonator saved me 30 bucks too
Peace.

i too would like a cat-back but without the noise in the car, i have a 5 month old.
soon to come is a high-flow 2.5" carsound cat.

Since the question of loudness with exhaust systems is pretty subjective (unless you have a sound meter to measure dB level at different frequencies) my answer is very subjective based on my tolerances & preferences.
- the system I now have is comprised of: Budget y-pipe, hi-flow cat (not sure of manufacturer), Budget b-pipe (no resonator), & 2K1 Maxima muffler with 2.5" inlet pipe.
- I'm a dad of 2 kids & appreciate quiet when cruising at constant speed esp. for long distance drives but like a nice bassy growl. Also, I don't find my jwt pop excessively loud when going WOT. This should set a bit of a "baseline" in my subjective comparison.
I find the jwt intake still to be the biggest noise-addition factor. When cruising, it is quiet to me. At WOT, the new exhaust system is slightly louder than just having jwt in place.

Hope this helps.
