4th Gen Rattle Question

Okay, here's the deal. I have had this NASTY LOUD rattle from my trunk area for the last year or so. It is driving me nuts! I have done a LOT of searching on the subject, and have tried about everything. I want to see what rattles you guys have/had, and what was done to fix them all in one thread. That way I can go down this one list, instead of fifty. My rattle sounds like metal on metal, but loud, not like the latch/striker. Thanks...

Could be a number of things...

license plate/frame in rear, exhaust system heat shields/connections, sheet metal in trunk/rear seat, spoiler...you said it wasn't a latch-type noise, but I was surprised at how loud my latch rattled. I didn't think that was the culprit until I cramped into the trunk and had a friend drive the car around. After pushing on panels and whatnot, I found it was the latch...couple layers of e-tape around hte latch, and all is well (except for spoiler LED plate rattle).

Maybe do the ride-in-the-trunk thing and see what you can diagnose from there. At worst, you'll have your ears closer to the source and might be able to track it down more easily.

Yeah I agree on riding in the trunk. I have stuffed a rag in the trunk lid under the rod, put foam tape behind license plate/bolts, taped the torsion bars, checked spare tire well, jack etc. Anyone else????

My trunk latch popper (if that's a word) kept developing a loose bolt. The electronic activator was then able to vibrate against the metal of the car. I fixed it w/ locktite. You have to remove the carpet section at the very back of the trunk. It's like 4 screw out plastic holders and 5 more plastic clips; I think. In any event, removing this piece of carpet may help you locate the culprit. There is also a relay there that may be loose. Good luck.

Yeah, just remove the entire back seat, and tighten the bolts holding the plate. Now I'm on to the sunroof, pillars, and dash. Great advice on this board.
