Please Help! Oxygen Sensors Went Out..f.ront And Rear...

Hi All,
I am new and need some help. The check engine light on my 96 Maxima GLE came on. I took it to the dealer this morning. They just called me and told me the computer found the front and rear Oxygen Sensors went out... The part $ is $206 EACH. So parts and labor I am looking at $667.30.
My question is:

1) Do oxygen sensors have Recalls on them? I remember about 2 years ago I had the same problem and took it to the same dealer, but they told me they replaced that for free because it was recalled... Today the dealer told me it was the 'Vent Valve' they replaced 2 years ago...so it was free since it was a recall... Maybe I remember incorrectly?

2) Do these sensors actaually take 2-3 hours to replace and check the problems? $667.30 sounds right to you?

Thank you guys!

2-3 hours SEEMS a little much....my guess would be 1 hour and 2 at the very most, cuz the rear O2 sensor is easy as pie to change, and the front, well the have the machinery to do the job fast...i think i smell a rip- yet i havent had mine changed at a dealer. Not a hard "at-home" job...

Yeah, there was a recall, cause I had it done to my 1996 GXE last week.

Do it yourself...it's not as hard as you think, plus, you'll save close to $500.00. You can get the O2 sensors online for MUCH cheaper..$90.00 on some sites...even cheaper on others. They're pretty much plug-and-play too. Just be sure to get you Hayes manual, cause it will really help you out. CarMax wanted to replace O2 sensors (all 3) for close to $1000.00. That wasn't gonna happen. Hope this helps

Josh

how do you know if your O2 sensor is bad?

thanks to all your replies...

You know the oxygen sensors went bad because they used the computer to find that out...since I had my check-engine light come on...

Masimus,
I just called a different dealership. They asked for my vin # and told me there was no recall on my vehicle...damn..... i told them about the recall 2 years ago..they said it was like the MIL light recall, which they replaced a bunch of stuff...
In addition, sounds like to me the recall can only be done once.... because he said, 'there was no recall on this vin # OR IT MAY HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE'...so....

Changing your O2 sensors is really an easy thing to do. You can get all three for less than $300 total from dealers such as courtesy, or even cheaper if you use non-OEM ones from a site like http://www.buyoxygensensors.com/.

All it takes is a 22mm (or 7/8") wrench, and about an hour of your time (to do all three).

For each sensor:

- Follow the wire back from the sensor itself to the wiring harness. Unclip the wire.
- Unscrew the sensor.
- Screw in the new sensor.
- Re-clip in the new wire.

Easy, huh?

Do a search on a thread on how to check you car using the internal computer. If your CEL isn't on, then you have no worries.

99V6Coupe - Do it yourself buddy...trust me. It will feel good knowing you did something to your car, adn you saved $500.00 Take that money and get exhaust done, perhaps a CAI too

The "MIL Recall" is only recall (that I know of) on 96 Max's and this is the one we are all talking about. Parts replaced included the Vent Control Valve, 3 O2 sensors and a bunch of other stuff. Call Nissan Customer Service at (800) Nissan-1 and the customer service people will know exactly if the recall was done or not (via VIN#).

A helpful thread about the recall

if it's ur o2 sensor jus do it urself....and $206 each is too much!!!
i had quotes from different dealers online...and a quote from a dealer near my house...online discount makes it around $103-120 + shipping....at the dealer i think it's around $153....well i had to change an o2 sensor for my bro's i30 and the sensor cost $80 at carquest i believe...it's made by bosch and i think is the exact same thing as nissan uses....the install only took about an hour..but he has a wsp ypipe so it was easier to work with

good luck
