Plug wires, OEM or aftermarket

I am giving my Maxima a tune up my slef and I am curious what plug wires are recommended. I have a '95 GXE and I am hearing that the Maxima fires hot, so should I replace with better conducting wires? Thanks.

Maximas have a tendency to run rich from the factory...mine did.

Re: Re: Plug wires, OEM or aftermarket

The 95 - up Maxima engine doesn't have plug wires in the traditional sense. It also doesn't have a distributor. Each sparkplug is fired by an individual coil pack that is plugged into the engine wiring harness and controlled by the engine computer. So, there are no plug wires to replace, which will save you a couple of bucks. The bad news is the plugs themselves are expensive, about $11 - $13 each. Don't try to cheap out and buy Bosch platinums or somehting like that, do a search and you'll see the consensus here is that the OEM plugs, NGK Platiums, are the only way to go.

NO WIRES!!!

There are no spark plug wires on the Maxima VQ motor. The setup is direct coil on plug. Use the OEM NGK Platinum plugs when you tune up your car.

Tune up should include:
Plugs
Air Filter
PCV Valve
Gas Filter
Clean Throttle body
Transmission, engine oil and coolant change - Depends on interval

Inspect belts, hoses, tires, brakes, windows, wash, wax, detail and refill washer fluid.

Enjoy The Ride!

Actually you can use the copper version of the NGK plugs and they work just as well, just last half as long, but for a couple of bucks a pop its worth using them. Plus if you are using nitrous you have to use them. The spark from the platinum's is not as intense as the copper plugs and the extra pressure etc from the nitrous has a tendency to blow out the spark. I know some people are still using platinum for juice but you are taking a risk.

Besure to replace your timing belt, distributor cap and plug wires at the same time.
