Modding automatics?

A friend of mine told me that installing a y-pipe, intake, and exhaust on an automatic I will lose significant low end power however gain only high end power. Is this true?

ummm NO especially not the y-pipe maybe just a tad with an intake and exhaust but not enough to hurt you 1/4 times and you will be a least .3-.4 quicker with all those mods

Well being that I've done all mods in question to my Auto, I can honestly say, I do not regret it, and have only noticed increased performance.

it is true if u install a 3 inch ypipe and b pipe onto a NA maxima (not necessary automatic). 2.5 inch will be enough for NA.

He can't possibly make a statement like that which generally applies to all vehicles. Every vehicle is different. Some have been well-tuned for performance, some for a compromise of power, noise-level, comfort, and driveability. For example...modifying a 911 Turbo with an intake from Frankencar (no offense Steve) would probably be pretty stupid since the car is an f'ing machine as is. However, the Maxima has been shown to benefit greatly by minor intake and exhaust modifications. The 2.5" y-pipe modification has done nothing but show power gains, particularly when coupled with a Cold-air Intake. The POP-style intakes have a ongoing debate about how they might cause some low-end torque loss although dyno's and witnesses have suggested that Frankencar has overcome that problem. Exhaust, behind the CAT (not y-pipe) hasn't show to do all that much other than make your car louder unless you have a boosted Maxima which needs breathing room.

However, anytime a friend of yours just says something like that and tries to blanket it over all vehicles, just ignore it since a statement like that cannot be made which applies to all vehicles. You need to research your own car to determine how modifications will help or hurt performance.

My $.02.
