For those that use Fuel Injector cleaners...

do you have a preferred brand? I bought some STP Fuel Injector Cleaner (Super Concentrated Stuff). I'm just wondering how it works. I've only put 13K on the car since I"ve owned it. I've never had a fuel injector cleaning and I don't know if the prior owner did or not? I want to start using this stuff to help keep the fuel system clean though.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I'm sure I'll get some that agree & disagree with using this

I use Redline myself - 1oz per tank of gas. 40K so far no harm done.
(then again I was one of the fools who tried Zmax)

Daniel B. Martin always said NOT to use these as preventive maintenance...

but the one I always use is Chevron Techron Concentrate. Don't get the diluted ProGard version.

I've also tried the Redline Fuel System Cleaner and it seemed to have solved some of my hesitation problems.

go to your dealer and ask about a TBI cleaner. its kinda expensive where i work, not sure how much Nissan charges for it. but it is a very extensive fuel injection cleaner, and will clean your TB and intake manifold. i haven't tried it yet, but i've heard it can make a big difference on cars with alot of carbon build up.

Mr. Martin always said not to use these types of cleaners because our manuals specifically say not to but I've been running a bottle of Techron every oil change and I'm on 90k without any problems at all. Runs just like it was new. That may be excessive but I don't believe any harm will be done.

The smaller of the two bottle sizes, for use with 12 gallons of fuel in the tank.

Same here - One bottle of Techron @ ever oil change.

Oh no - I just went synthetic with extended drain intervals, what should I do now?

Got this quote off a website.

Fuel Injectors and Cleaning with Redline's SI-1 by Larry Weeks
I wrote to Redline to find a local dealer for some products, and asked about the SI-1 injector/valve cleaner. I mentioned the Nissan TSB which states that we shouldn't use injector cleaner. Here's their response:

"The SI-1 will not cause any performance problems in the pintleless Nissan injectors. Nissan believes that with the pintleless design, there is a much less problem with injector deposits and that many fuel injector cleaners actually contribute to intake valve deposits. Red Line SI-1 still will actually help clean intake valve deposits, which can be a major source of driveability problems such as hesitation when accelerating. "

Since I switched to AMSOIL Synthetics I use a 20 ounce bottle of Chevron Fuel System Cleaner every 3,000 miles or oil change. Been doing this almost a year with no problems.

I just had plugs changed at dealer in NJ, said FI Cleaning was $110, may try that next week.

I've used BG 44K 3 times total. One at 30K, one at 45K, and one at 52K (just got the 60 K service done a lil early for a special project)

There are three that I would consider using: Amsoil's PI Peformance Improver, Redline's SI-1, or BG 44k.

I believe that if the fuel you use has MTBE additive, you must use some fuel system cleaner frequently; perhaps every few months.

MTBE leaves lots of carbon deposits.

Chevron Techron Fuel system cleaner

I've been using the diluted version.. Why should we only use the concentrate version?

Most dealerships will use some kinda fuel system or fuel injector cleaner as part of it's 30k (and 60k) service. Depending on the dealership, they will use different products. I know my local dealership uses BG 44k. Mossy Nissan uses Chevron Techron Concentrate but they also sell Nissan Fuel System Cleaner (isn't that ironic?)

Techron: 4 bottles for $9.49 @ CostCo
Nissan: 11.99
BG44k: less than $20 from a WRX website or infinitiparts.com

I used to use Pyroil cuz it's only $0.99. I always use some kinda cleaner every oil change: 3000 miles/3months with 10/30 mobil 1.

as some other people mentioned, don't use them unless you have to. they result in deposits on the valves. at least that's what i have read and heard.

since i've owned the car i only had to use a cleaner solution once, and it was STP.

Before or after fuel filter change?

I plan on using a can of BG44k. Should I change my fuel filter first, then run the bottle through. OR, should I run the can through the dirty fuel filter? Thanks, JsL.

Good question! I would run it through the old filter just in case it loosens something in the tank.

I don't Recommend using STP FI cleaner

The active ingredient in STP FI cleaner is plain old ordinary Kerosene. Your car runs on Gasoline, or Gasohol, not Kerosene. The last time I used it in my max. That tank of gas I got around 18 MPG when I usually get 21+. I don't recommend STP, go with Chevron, or BG44k

The Volvo enthusiasts recommend changing the oil and filter after going through a tank of BG44k. No mention of changing the fuel filter after using BG44k ($9 part anyways. Just do it)
