5th gen muffler myth answered by a DYNO

I have a 1997 se maxima.... with a dyno max muffler I dyno'd at 173 HP and 183 TQ

Today with a 2000 se meffler, I dyno'd at 171 HP and 180 TQ

So a loss of 2 HP and 4 lbs of TQ

So this is the REAL DEAL on the 5th gen muffler. I am NOT the first to do it. But I am just posting dyno results to let those of you thinking about it know what loss your looking at.

Temp/baro was very close to each other. So there is no loss there and all are SAE corrected.

any questions on mods, check the dyno forum.

Comparing to a Dynomax? I've used these mufflers (before I got the GReddy and also on my old Supra) and they flow pretty good.

I would imagine that the 2K muffler is still better than the STOCK 4th Gen one...

Right, we need 2k vs. OEM results as well...

yes your correct...

I know there are a few people with hi-flow mufflers thinking about noise reduction, so I posted my dyno results.

Maybe being the evil mod you are you could make this information find it's way into the FAQ

just my 4 cents.

You are right about the size, I have a 2 1/2" Mandrel bent B-Pipe so I had them cut the inlet off the 2k1 muffler and expand the opening and weld on a 2 1/2" inlet to B-Pipe. Not sure if it did much good but I just couldn't stand to hook up to a 2 1/4 opening.

Does anyone know the size of the 2k2 muffler is it any bigger?

Very observant. Because its not. I am running a hybrid PR CAI and have moved my battery over and turned it lengthwise. I plan on getting a 45 deg elbow and putting the filter right behind the headlight so I take it out to get more air in. For now it just gets a bit more cool air in there.

Thanks bags533 for doing the compare. That was very different than my results.

..OEM 4th gen 175.5hp 184.7tq
....2K variable 183.7hp 193.3tq

Yeah I know it's weird. You say the OEM pull was bad? I did two pulls and that was the lesser gain. Maybe my OEM muffler did have a problem if that's possible.
orig thread and Feb dyno links

Figures are accurate, did 2 more pulls last weekend comparing K&N with Monsterflow. current fwhp is now over 190 with 16" rims.

You got almost 10 HP and TQ just by adding a 2k muffler?

Thanks so much bags. I have a Dynomax now and was seriously considering a 5th gen muffler. I didn't really expect any gain, I just want my car to be at a decent sound level. See my thread:

You said it is quiet. How much more so then your Dynomax? A large difference? Thanks again so much for posting this. It helped a lot.

Can anybody tell me if you actually gain 10 HP just by getting a 2k1 muffler?
Thanks,

I was wondering at what rpm does the muffler open up? On my se-r it opens around 4200-4400rpm and I have a 2.25in cat + piping. It is quiet on my car too.

I honestly do think the OEM muffler is quite restrictive. I mean just look how tiny the piping is inlet and outlet. Theres probably 101 baffles inside as well. However I hate droney exhaust.

Wondering how well the 5th gen muffler fits on the 4th gen piping? Any fitment issues or is it a straight bolt on replacement. BTW, I have a stillen B pipe ...

by myself I just turn the 12's up and it was fine.

so it is a little louder than stock...and about 1/2 as loud as the dynomax

big_ham..IT IS NOT a direct bolt on.. I have to have it welded on TWICE..the first time it melted my bumper.. and it still does not sit perfect.

anything else just ask

No, you cannot gain 10 HP from a 5 gen. muffler. I don't know why the results were so different with the guy and his dynos, but I'm pretty sure that getting a 5th gen. muffler will not give you that kind of increase

i have the 2k muffler on my altima. i just had my piping increased to a 2 1/4 setup so i dont see how this muffler can really hurt me. it is a little louder than stock but it has a very nice sound to it for a four cylinder car people wonder what setup i have. its very comfortable in the car around 75-80mph on the highway unlike my dynomax muffler which droned so bad u had a headache after a 6 hour road trip. also it was pretty much a direct fit. hangers lined up perfectly and the piping followed the same route

I love the 5th gen muffler

I have an intake, Stillen Y, RT Cat, Courtesy B, and the 5th gen muffler. It is not a direct bolt-on. The person I bought it off of had it cut so I went to my local muffler shop. They took off my stock muffler to measure the curve and angle of the pipe that connects the B-pipe and them muffler. They welded a flange to it and made it into a direct bolt-on for me for only $30 and 15 minutes of my time. I had the B-pipe and 5th gen muffler installed at the same time. The power increase was just shy of the Y-pipe in my opinion. I put the Y-pipe in the week before.

y not just get an aftermarket muffler , get one with a silencer or just get one with a small tip, if a 5th gen gives gains then an aftermarket one must give more, plus i think they look better.

Yes, go ahead and do that. Most of these guys have been there already and the STILL went with the 2k max muffler.

I've had my 2k muffer on my Ve 3-gen for years and wouldn't change it for the world. Nothing is more irritating that a droning exhaust sound.

EXACTLY

BUT do as you wish.. This muffler is what I wanted and a few other members wanted.

I will however be changing soon, but for no other reason than I do not want my muffler to be the bottle neck in my system
