Feeding your HAI/Hybrid Ram air: Functional hood scoop in prog

First of all I have tried to ween myself off Maxima.org some like medicsonic and i'm proud to say I haven't posted since the 25th!

I've been talking to another .org member and he is doing this idea to his Maxima. He has a hybrid intake and thought of ways to feed it more air. He decided to find ways to make a functional ram air and mold a sleek hood scoop on his hood. This will be on the drivers side of the car where the intake popcharger is, and will be a sleek and clean looking scoop he says.

Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this/done it? It seems like, especially on the highway, the amount of air that will rush into the engine through that scoop would give MAJOR gains and boost in power. Plus it would give the conservative styling of the maxima a little muscular look.My concern is foreign objects that would fly into the engine such as small pebbles, water, dirt, ect.

I'm very interested in your opinions on this, it seems like great mod!

I don't know exactly, that's why I'm posting here. I was hoping people like Dave B. who probubly know about these things would explain how they work. Like if a filter has to be placed inside the scoop, or if a path to the intake is even needed...stuff like that.

Actually I disagree with you about the sorona scoop. I think putting one on the drivers side of the hood being functional would be cool. I'm open to alot of designs though.

Isn't that what the air filter is for?

Yes but with a conventional setup there is no direct path like a hood scoop feeding direct air into the POP. I don't know how hood scoops work exactly, i'm just thinking of all the possible scenerios.

Flexible beam Jeffrey. I'd prefer to call our beam-link a stiffer, more united independent suspension

Yesterday I was moving cars to put mine in the garage, I was in my moms '96 Grand Caravan with the 3.8L V6 with 215HP/245TQ. That thing has some fine punch off the line...I was able to spin the tires for a good couple of seconds. Can't do that in my Minima

Craig somebody has done this. I don't remember his name but he has a white '97-'99 SE with a chromalusion (looks green) front lip. He has two large scoops on either side of his hood to be symmetrical. I tried searching but couldn't find his name or post.

bah..you know you'd take a '95 SE 5-speed anyday over your IRS 3rd genny ...I'd like to diagnose what you have as "VQ envy".

So.....anyone got any info on...what was the topic....hood scoops?

Hi Cyrus

I know who your talking about. He doesn't have functional scoops and like you said he has 2 of them. I want one scoop that's functional on the drivers side. I was hoping to get some info but Jeff had to hoe up my thread

i'm pretty sure his was photochopped and he never did it. he got flamed bigtime, but then again, you had to see the picture.

can't you just look at another car that has a stock or aftermarket functional hood scoop, and maybe see if they have any type of filter on themselves to prevent stuff from going in besides air? that's what i'd do.

I thought they were functional? I don't see how you could have that much air rushing into them with no place to go and they wouldn't fly off. But honestly I don't think a hoodscoop would ever suite the Maxima, it's too round for one. Maybe a very sleek on like a Mustang GT one, but it's not in the right place and on the right it would look a little weird to say the least.

I would but I would like to know if it would be worth it. It seems like it would produce major gains but then again no one has done it. It's barely talked about. I wanna know all about it and why people like theblue and dave b. and those sleepers who are really into performance haven't scooped their max's. Who knows, maybe it will produce 10TQ to the wheels

You see, I need expert advice such as yours Jeff.

Okay I'll be serious now. Try running a scoop from under the car and point it at the cone filter. Or better yet enclose the cone in a case and run a hose to that. I've seen some decent HVAC 3" flexible tubing at Home Depot that would do a nice job. If you like the results from that, then I would say a scoop would to at least as well. this way you don't mangle your hood for nothing.

Well as you probubly know I have a CAI and love it. The only way I'd go back to a hot air intake is if there was a scoop feeding it. I would do this for a mixture of functionality/looks. I think if it were to prove big gains it's win/win for me becuase given the right scoop it'll look aggressive and unique as well. I just want to get all the info possible about scoops before I decide to go out and cut up my car.

The other member who is doing this is Global_threat, I am really interested in how his plans are gonna turn out.

well this does seem like a good idea but like i said in the other tread those sport bikes you see racing on speed vision have these scoops molded into the front of the bike. ( where the head light would have been on a street verion of there bikes)and they function pretty well as a ram air system. but then again you are talking about something that is desighned to scoope up the air at 150+miles an hour and ram the air right into there motors. if you can succesfully build some contraption that will do the same you might see some gains. but then again were not doing 150+ in our maximas
maybe some of the orgers are but no the majority.
