Hey guys, I don't know if you remember my post a while back about the 3geez guys :P Anyways, I finally compiled what I think is enough facts to put my friend's thoughts to rest (well stock thoughts). Please tell me what you think. Oh, I also posted this on the 3geez board so maybe he'll see his own buddies telling him that the Max is better. So here's our car:

Are you sure they used a carb in the Accord? Most manufacturers had fuel injected engines by the 80's. Damn, even my old POS '88 Cavalier had throttle body injection and put out more horsepower and quicker times than the POS Accord. The Accord shouldn't even be compared to the Maxima, maybe a Geo Metro or a Yugo would be a better comparison.

I just did a search on the net to see if the Accord did use a carbuerator and it turns out it did. Man, that is really pathetic, using ancient technology in a modern car. I'm surprised they get any power at all, fuel injection is a much more efficient way to make power than a carb.

lol yea, the only reason i'm comparing these cars still is because that's my friend's accord, and that's my maxima. He says we didn't race a quarter mile, so I found the times. But he also says he has a higher top speed, so I found the estimated top speed and the final drive ratio (I couldn't get individual gear ratios for the Accord). Man it's been a lot of research, but what more can I do except give out those numbers?

 

Hmm my 87 maxima auto with k&n panel + timing advance ran a 17.2 @ 78.5 at the drag strip. All you have to do is run 91+ octane and bump the timing to 23-24*BTDC. You should own that accord, it is the newer ones to worry about.

 

You should get out there and race that fool! Make sure you tape it if you can... then we can all laugh at him (no offense to your friend)

 

Though I'm tired of having people ask "how will my car pit against this one"...."or should I race them, will I beat him".....I must say though that I applaud the fact you took the time and got the numbers. Very few people will look into it. The other thing to consider also isn't so much the numbers, but the driver. Some people are really good drivers, a lot of others aren't. That plays a big factor to....which may sometimes make the numbers look like they mean nothing at all.

Thanks maximase86, man it's been a long time since the start of that thread. Over 1 year! But both our cars are auto, and I beat him twice in 1/4 mi + races, though he still refuses to admit that means anything :-)

of course none of them were japanese cars let alone some accord...AHH HAHAHAAA...like an old 440 for example...mmm thats a damn big engine right there...put that in the accord and you might have a decent car...as long as it doesent fall apart idleing


(disclamer: you should never put a old 440 in any other car except a product of GM....if you do you may be hunted down and smacked across the head for being a dumb ***....something like this )

Actually, you don't wanna use a 440 in a GM product, either, as the 440 was a crystler product. and i'd still prefer a 426 Hemi to a 440 wedge, anyday.

The badest GM big blocks were the 409, 427, 454, and the 502 from the late eighties, only offered as a crate engine. Although the 396 was a bad boy, at the time of it's release, it wasn't the baddest on the block. And don't forget also, the later 396 engines actually displaced 402 ci...

if this thread is really that old im surprised noone has said by now that the lxis got fuel injection and had either like 111hp up to 87 and lkike 120 88-89. i dont even know for sure. but i do have an 87 accord lxi in the yard that has fuel injection (auto) and ran 18.5 at 76 on my gtech.

 

my 1990 accord LX had multiport fuel injection. my 86 s-10 blazer has throttle body injection. but my friend's girlfriend's jeep was an '89 wrangler and it had a straight carb with a 4.2 litre straight 6.

explain that.

I love cars. they keep customers coming into my store when they break down.

 

the only accord back then that got EFI got the LX-i badge.

 

My buddy used to drive an '89 LX-i, and another friend had an '88 LX. Still, even though I have a 3rd gen, I think the 2nd gen is much much better car than the Accord of that year.

 

any maxima (or nissan product, for that matter) is better than any honda product, ever made, ever.

but that's just my personal opinion.

well here's an update on things...

my friend got a body kit, paint job, lowered, etc on his accord. swapped to manual tranny. doin an engine swap right now annnnnnd strenghtening the internals.

as for me: the maxima was sold over the summer...i am now driving a black 350z!

 

Seeing as this is a Maxima site, I believe the results might be a slight bit skewed.....

Yup, there is definately bias here. However, there are good honda products out there. Take the hybrid technology for one. Nissan doesn't even have that. And really, if you think about it, Honda cars will last just as long as most Nissan's as long as you take care of it. I'd still go with a Nissan because I have a bias.

Well I am biased as far as older Hondas are concerned. But my friend who had the '89 LX-i has an '04 Accord EX (loaded except nav) V6 6spd now and it's an awesome car. 240hp VTEC V6, and that car is a blast to ride in.

 

Yeah the latest ones aren't too bad...I'd still get an Infiniti G35 instead, sedan or coupe. Thier motors are no where nearly as reliable or as good as a VQ.

I don't think any of Honda's engines can beat the longevity of an equivalent Nissan one, given that each has had proper maintenance. Even Nissan's old 4-bangers like the Z-22 in the old pick-ups can go a long ways without trouble. My neighbor has a rotten hulk of an 81 200SX that still purrs like kitten with a little Z-20 in it. But really, there are a lot of inferior engines out there. My sister has a 93 Hyundai Elantra, 2.0 16V, and that thing has about as much pick up as a diesel Rabbit. Some manufacturers just don't have it I guess. As good as our Max's are, there are still other manufacturers getting more power from the same or less displacement. I will always fondly remember my 81 European model BMW 528i, 2.8 liters of tire shredding hp, 182 hp/195 lb of torque. That thing kept them spinning into third no problem. And my old 75 BMW 3.0Si (Bavaria) with a 3.0 injected six with a four speed and 200 hp/ 200 tq. It went like a raped ape. But of course they were also gas guzzling pigs compared to the Max. I guess this is starting to be a bit of a long rant now so i'll shut up and continue drinking my beer. My .02 cents anyway.
