All the time or just once? Maybe your key fob swung or had something swing into or a combination of, accidentaly hitting the lock button. Or maybe the switch for the locks on the driver door is loose causing the circuit to close with the impact of the door closing.

Wow, that's devious. People usually have problems with just the passenger doors locking. There could be problems with the wiring, ie a short occurred, but I'd think you'd notice symptoms more than once.

You were the only one in the car? The only problem I've ever had with my locks was my friends. Most of them have cars with manual locks and feel the need to lock the door as they get out while I'm still grabbing my stereo & wallet, etc. Then they lock me in. No matter how many times I tell them... (coincidentally, they're amazed every time I unlock the doors before I get to the car)

It's my wife's car, and I suspected that she was hitting the lock button on the fob. So I took the battery out of it. Still does it (not ALL of the time, about 50%).

How can I check if the switch is loose?

Thanks,
Jason

Tell me about it!! Just as I was bragging about how this car is BULLETPROOF and IT WILL RUN FOREVER (155,000).

It happens ALL THE TIME... Just me, me and my wife, me, my wife, and kid. Even with the dogs.

I had a grand am gt once that was programmed to do this from the factory. I found out one day when I was going to go through an automatic carwash, and I got out to scrub the wheels......yup, car was even running, with keys in the ignition, and there about 5 cars behind me!!

do you have a after market car alarm? If so they are usually programmed by default to lock keys. They can be re-programmed to not do this behavior. I had this problem on my accord so I went to the manufacturers website and downloaded the docs and reprogrammed it to leave the damm doors open and also turned off auto-arm. hope it helps.

Dude mine does this too. It will lock the driver door sometimes. I carry a spare key in my wallet, plus I make it a point to take the keys every time I get out. Haven't been locked out like a dumbass yet LOL

I don't have an aftermarket alarm, but the car DOES have a factory "security" system. Can this be dis-armed?

That's strange...

because I CAN'T lock my car with the keys in, and a door open...
I guess I could lock it with the door closed, but, with the door
closed and the keys in the ignition, how the hell does it lock?

have you checked for gremlins?

I have a 98 GXE. WhenI got my car I told the dealer I didnt want their security system. The doors never used to lock autmatically. After I got my clifford arrow put in, the doors lock as soon as I put twist the key to ACC (right before the engine cranks). Id recommend you guys check the security system out.. they relays might be flaky.

Hey make sure the security isn't in passive arming mode. That locks all the doors once the ignition is off. It is on a timed relay so you may want to ask the dealership if that is the case. Also I used to work at a car electroinc store and people used to buy cars and never eealize they had the alarm because no key chain but then looked under the dash and sure enough there was one from the previous owner. CHeck it out. Goodluck.

It's not the alarm system, 'cause that's deactivated once the key is in and turned. When the doors all lock do the hazards flash? Is the alarm light on or blinking? If you leave the windows down and when they lock just reach in and manually unlock a door. If it is the alarm, it should go off.

I'm bettin on the switch on one of the front doors too. Even with the key in and the engine on if you manually lock either front door it will lock all 4 doors. You don't even need to lock it all the way, just move the lock lever a liiiittttle forward and it'll lock the rest.

So that's got to be the problem.

Figure out which front door does it. Then pull the door panel off and try to figure out where that sensor/switch is.

My car does the same thing sometimes. I will park it in the garage and NOT lock it and come to it the next morning and it will be locked, and I'm like what the hell?

power locks

You have a short somewhere but lots of luck finding it.
I had a Toyota Celica GTS with every option including power locks and it would lock whenever it took the notion. I could be riding down the road and the power locks would click the locks on and off 3 or 4 times in 10 seconds. Then, it might not lock itself for a month. I never left the keys in that car.
