600KMs to full tank, all HWY kms (LONG)

Drove the Maxima, a 92 SE 5spd, all cruise control, from Toronto to Montreal, distance is 550kms.
The drive there was on a full tank of 94octane, Sunoco gas, cruise control all the way at 120~2km/h. I only managed 560kms to that tank.

While in Montreal, top the tank up , with 89 octane, Esso. Drove 150~kms in the city, wasted 1/4 tank.(pinging was present sometimes when at WOT, timing too advanced, its set to run on 94 octane only)

Filled up again b4 heading back home, at Petro Canada, with 89 octane.
made it back to Toronto, same with cruise at 120Km/h. Arrived, and again 550kms on the trip meter, but this time i had fuel left over, drove around in the city here, and put another 50kms on the meter, so when fueling up, the tripmeter read 600KM.

The needle started moving at 90KM.
@1/4 tank point, 200KM.
@1/2 tank point, 390KM.
@3/4 tank point, 550KM.
@E, 600KM.

Conclusion, my Maxima is okay on fuel, but its not the greatest. I was expecting more, like 700KM to a highway tank, and at least 400KM city/hwy.

For the Americans, you can do your own conversion!
(pinging only when WOT like 4 or 5 times, and then no more pinging, around town)(the ecu must have learned how much to retard timing due to the ****ty fuel)
My idle was also eratic, anywhere from 750rpm, to 1200rpm.

So, fueled up again with 94!! idle settled back to normal. No more pinging at all.
This tank turned out 400KMs with city/hwy driving, some of my driving around town is a tad spirited!!

Ive owned this whale for over three years now. Fuel consumption has gone up a tad since my mods.
With city/hwy driving, I average 365 KM per tank. (sometimes 400ish, or low 300's)
Heres what i notice.
Needle moves at 60KM.
1/4 tank, 100-120KM.
1/2 tank, 225-250KMs
it then dips quick, and I fill up when the light stays on, ~350kms

hey hey

So I take you're from Toronto. Well I'm from Montreal and I also own a 5 spd 92 se. Just wanted to let you know that if you haven't changed your fuel filter or anything related to fuel economy maybe you should cause with mine I'm getting around 700k on one tank that is if I don't play around too much with it(fast accelerations). By the way does yours have any problems?

The highest octane gas I generally see in my region is 93 octane. So last week when I pulled into a Sunoco station in Pennsylvania I was surprised to see they offered both 93 and 94 octane gas. I also noticed an Ethanol sticker on the pump.

When I got near a computer I went to the Sunoco corporate website to investigate. It seems they blend their 93 octane gas with Ethanol to raise the octane to 94. I was rushed at the time so I didn't get to study the data in great detail. I believe they also use ethanol in their other gas grades too. Besides the usual concerns about ethanol's effect on fuel systems, I believe the web site said gas mileage will be reduced between 2 to 3 percent.

I am from Toronto. I have changed my fuel filter over at about 20K kms ago. It wont make a 100K per tank difference though. I know my motor is running a tad on the rich side, i can smell it sometimes, and there is backfiring sometimes when downshifting. Also, i think the ****ty spark plugs im using are partly the reason, along with timing. I am using Bosch platinum, i dont know what i was thinking, i should have gone to another shop to buy the NGK, but i was rushed. Never rush into things.

My timing has been pulled back a bit cause i was pinging at times, i think due to the ****ty plugs once again. Once they are changed, and the timing set to 18 advanced, im going to see what it does, and try to get some O2 readings.
I want to increase timing a bit more, and add a FPR. We'll see what that does later on.

As for problems with my maxima, ive gone thru two O2 sensors during 40K kms, my factory y pipe blew a weld, my alternator has been shot twice,, my motor mounts are on the way out, the rear sway bar links both ripped of the frame( welded them back on) And the tranny input shaft bearing has been disintegrated once, So i got a rebuild on the entire tranny, all new bearings, seals, shift fork, clutch, lightened flywheel,, 4.5liters of AMS oil. Its all good now.

All in all, the maxima has been pretty good, although its not a car that can take abuse like a honda or mitsubishi.

From the Edmunds website, specs on the 1992 Maxima SE--

http://pda.edmunds.com/used/1992/nis...dan/specs.html

---
Fuel Tank: 18.5 gal.

EPA Mileage Est. - Manual:
(City/Hwy) 21 mpg / 26 mpg
EPA Mileage Est. - Auto:
(City/Hwy) 19 mpg / 26 mpg

Range in Miles - Manual:
(City/Hwy) 389 mi. / 481 mi.
Range in Miles - Auto:
(City/Hwy) 352 mi. / 481 mi.
---

Through the power of mathematics, 481 miles = 776 km.

On my recent trip from Austin, TX to State College, PA I averaged 25.5 MPG over 1835 miles, so theoretically this would suggest a maximum range of 25.5 MPG x 18.5 gal = 472 miles (761 km.) However, I don't like to walk to gas stations so I topped off frequently.
