Finally sending the speedo cluster out. Who did you use?

After all these years of retightening the screws back down i am tired of doing this periodically so i am sending it out. I have narrowed it down to two places who said they can repair it in 24 hours. Who did you guys use close to the NY Tri state area. I want to send it Monday. Also can the car be driven without the cluster?

BTW, it is for the intermittent speedometer

instead of tightening the screws try resoldering the old corroded contacts, did this on both of my maximas and never had to touch the speedos again.

All you're doing is touching the solder points with the soldering iron, and i would recommend adding some new solder and use some flux to make the job easier. Clean it up with rubbing alcohol after you're done.

IIRC the solder points you need to freshen up are the ones in the bottom right hand corner around a point labeled ABS, you can do all of them but I think it's mainly the ones in that area that are the problem

I was also succesfell by soldering the contacts, as others have mentioned here.

The repair place is probably do the same thing.

Might as well try to do it yourself. You have nothing to lose.

Why not just buy new backing film. Nissan still sells it.

As I understand it,backing film is for the back of the instrument panel.

The issue with the speedo cluster is a seperate issue. The solder joint at the screw mounting holes eventually cracks due to vibration. Which is why resoldering that joint will often fix it.

I'm not home but here's a pic i found of exactly what I'm talking about. Taking a soldering iron and adding some fresh solder to these points fixed both of my speedos. I'd recommend going over any in this area and any on the board that are corroded, it really isn't that hard to do might as well be thorough

Just resoldered it. Did not help. I still had ro hit the dashboard to wake it up.

buy one at JY, solve the problem. You can just change the stepper motor and keep the odormeter current mileage.

Update: Ended up sending it out to AutoXpressTech and it is completely fixed. $100.00
