Engine knocking sound?

Hello guys, I have a '16 maxima and I just hit 31k miles.

A few weeks ago I noticed once the car was fully warmed up at idle there was a strange knocking sound coming from somewhere in the engine bay. Usually the car is pretty quiet while idling it in a quiet place like my garage. I'm taking it in on monday. Has anyone noticed anything like this with their cars? I don't think its normal since i've never heard it before but my warranty is almost out and I hope they don't decide to find something after its gone.

thanks

heres a clip if you can hear it. I really don't remmeber hearing it before, but if its nothing id be relieved

Hard to hear too well in the video, most of that sounds like normal engine noise for the VQ35 though, how many miles on your oil?

Yes, I believe I hear a distinct knock in your video. What I hear does not sound normal. No prob like this with my '17. If engine or drivetrain related you are very smart to get her in for diagnosis now. It sounds too harsh for a fuel injector noise. Noise still there with AC compressor off? How's your oil level? Serpentine belt in good shape? If belt has a bad cut or separation a hunk of it could be hitting something with each revolution. Heck, I would not worry about it now. Just let the experts diagnose it. May be something really simple.

Yeah sorry, the video was taken on a public street so its harder to hear. And regarding the oil I changed it 2 weeks ago. And the AC was not running at the time of the video I haven't seen if it makes a difference on or off. I am taking it in on monday because it does not feel normal. thanks guys

i have 66k and i have not noticed a similar sound if that frequency.
i will take a guess that it is a bad pulley/bearing...
but that is just anon-mechanic guess.
hope ithus is not too bad of an issue for you.

That's a bearing knock. Lots of 7th gens had the issue. Most had it fixed under warranty. Do a search in 7th gen section.
I'm shocked Nissan didn't fix the problem on 8th gens 😡

Here's another clip of it inside a garage so it's easier to hear . I'm hoping they can hear it tomorrow if not I'll Let them hear it tomorro from the video

Also to note doesn't happen on Cold start only once the engine gets warm enough if that makes a difference

BS. If they insist the sound is normal, then ask to listen (with the tech that claims it is a normal sound) to other new Maximas on their lot. Then compare the "normal" sounds of each.

Just make absolutely sure the dealer has a record showing that you brought this problem to their attention BEFORE your warranty expired. If something like a major engine repair is necessary, we don't want it to cost you.

that is a great idea, I will be sure to keep all my records, hopefully the different techs in the morning take a better look.

Yes indeed, in no way, shape or fashion is that sound normal for the VQ35 engine at all!

Indeed it does sound like the start of a bearing knock (bad bearings), will get worse over a short period of time too!!

well heres what happened, when I took the car in the sound was present, I sent them multiple clips in case for some reason the car decided not to do it (its been happening daily for 2-3 weeks). They did not sound very concerned with the sound acted as if it was normal (from the clips) And of course once it got to the techs they claim there is no sound so they are not going to check anything. He said you have to bring it back when the sound is present so basically I need it to get worse first... I told them they have to let the car warm up first but I have no way to check if they even did that, they are just in a rush to get my car out of there. So basically if it comes back again today, which Im sure it will.. I'm going to try another dealer... I really do NOT feel comfortable driving the car with that noise. Oh well, not much I can do. Going to go pick up the car now

That's the only way to do it. It may be a PIA but Nissan will cover you. Wouldn't want be the guy in a similar position that went to a third party oil change provider.

Ridiculous, sorry that you have to go through all of this, and they know that that's not normal (Nissan service centers have a tendency not to hear etc what the customers hear). Like others have said if something drastic happens (which I hope does not) they will have take care of you and your car with all of your proof.....!!!

Hey guys,

just a quick update, last night my car was acting up everytime it reached around 4500 RPMS it would competley lose power almost like hard braking, happened 5 times last night. So I made an appointment with my dealer and on the way to the dealership i couldnt get it to go past 2k rpms and 3/4 throttle it had like zero power, stuttering. So luckily I was able to make it to the dealership and they verified the problem on the road test and said the valve body for the transmission went bad. They are replacing it and They also said I have to take it easy on the car and shouldn't drive it in sports mode all the time and stick to Normal mode for a majority of the driving from now on. I just find that so strange since they call it a 4 door sports car yet they tell me sports mode can't be used daily.

Anyways car has 32k miles on it as of right now, just ranting. Hopefully no more issues, kind of makes me want to get rid of the car. Perhaps it is my fault since I prefer sports mode when I drive my car.. we'll see

You should escalate to a service manager. There is no reason to not drive in Sport in a healthy car.

It also sounds odd, at least to me, that what you describe has anything to do with the transmission.

Engine knocking sound from the original post was never fixed, still have yet to figure out what that is as it comes and goes.

This other issue that started last night was being repaired today as they have the part in stock.. I hope it fixes it, maybe that is why ive been getting 15 MPG.

I agree though about the sport mode, they said this car was not "designed" to be driven daily in sport mode lol. bleh

whoa! intermnal stuff scares me all the time.

but for that, most likely as others had mentioned, bearing issue, tell them to stick their long screwdriver on the bearing nut and take a listen.

you could try and check if those pulleys wobble by-hand.

Hey guys, been 4 days since they replaced the valve body ... it’s been acting strange since then hesitating A lot more but I figured maybe it was paranoid or needed a break in period or something. Then tonight on the way home i tried to give it 3/4 throttle and it was stuck at 2k rpms wouldn’t give me power then all of a sudden shot to 6500 rpms and back down to 2 and car stuttered a bit. Ugh. Then on the freeway the cars power felt like a 4 cylinder ... super slow on the power delivery and I tried to gas it and it wouldn’t go past 70 mph and just stuck redlining wouldn’t shift...

what the hell is wrong with my car? They said the transmission looked fine but it sure drives like absolute crap... and being capped at 70 is a joke

Left my house to go to work, soon as I put it in drive I had no power for a few seconds and the engine light and traction control light came on so I tried to reach the dealership which is about 10 minutes away... nope! Now the engine completely shut off too. Stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck to the dealer . Bummer..... I’m kind of nervous to keep the car now

geez, what the eff!
i think they’re going to have to replace your whole drivetrain.
maybe replace the whole car, and let them send it to nissan engineers.

hope things work out well for you.

dude, I hate to say it but it beginning to sound a bit like a late sprouting lemon. I'm no expert, but the strange behavior sounds more like electronics then mechanical issues. Best of luck getting to the bottom of this.

Should have used 91/93 octane...the non-premium octane will get you EVERY TIME!!!

you say that the dealer says you shouldn't drive in sport mode all the time. Is there any truth to this? Does anyone have any input on this? I have been using it 90% of the time, and haven't noticed anything wrong.

Im curious too, the advisor was surprised when the tech told him that. I'll probably still drive it in sport mode only because I really do not enjoy normal mode

I think that is bogus. Unless there is something in the owners manual about It I find it hard to believe it would cause any harm. It just changes the shift points a bit and maybe tightens the steering, nothing that causes major stress on the car.

Doesn't the car default to normal mode anyway unless you hit the button every time? Maybe not every quick trip to the grocery store needs to be in sport mode.

The throttle body now????
Hmmmmm, I would not be surprised to say that the "mechanic" damaged it during the procedure to replace de valve body somehow....or it was previously damaged....

I drive my car in sport mode all the time with 21K on the odometer....the car is fine...

yeah... it’s strange . I just hope this actually fixes it, nothing worse than not trusting your car! I hope it will be back to normal after they replace it.

Is it possible that these issues could of been causing my horrible mpg? I used to get 20+ last 6 months I’ve been getting 15-16

I don't believe your transmission valve body is anywhere near the throttle body, but it is very strange that these two major events happened at the same time. Dealer must have been going nuts chasing this down, not to mention you.
