i was driving my 91 automatic up to a stop sign about 5 min after starting my car. as i am about to stop the car stalls and wont start. battery wont jump start and it wont even turn over u turn the key and nothing happenes, it was towed but does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? thanx!

 

Did you check the fuses under the hood, near the battery there should be one marked start. just a thought

I seriously doubt that it would be a timing belt. Basically if it was I think he would hear the motor trying to turn over (at least a good click from the start engaging) From the sounds of this it sounds like he may have simply blown some sort of main fuse or maybe even some sort of fusible link. My money is on an electrical problem.

 

Could be the alternator same promblem with my chevy.

 

One way to find out is if you can jump it and have it running while still hooked on to the other vehicle.

 

you try starting it back up in nuetral yet?

 

You mentioned that it stalled when coming to a stop. It's possible that your timing belt broke and that's what caused the engine to stall. It's hard to say until you get your car diagnosed to find out exactly what caused it, but if the RPM was way low (around 500 RPM) when you came to a halt, engine damage may be minor. (When I say minor, I mean one or two bent valves instead of all 12).

It's when you have it floored at 4000 RPM and the belt snaps, you know that's the end.

I had that problem today. I forgot the name of the problem, but its in the Haynes manual, but try starting the car in Neutral (eventhough it shouldn't start in any other gear than park), when it happen to me there was no cranking when I turned the key, luckily I was at a gas station and the mechanic helped me out and when we tryed starting it in neutral, BOOM...engine starts and runs like a charm the rest of the day! maybe the fuel filter got clogged and caused the stall? cross your fingers bro!

 

Did you check your battery? Usually you can tell when the alternator has gone because your clock & gauge lights would start to dim as the car is running off the battery. Probably just a bad battery or wire.

Its probably your alternator, the same thing happened to me when i had my 92 se, when mine did this there was no power at all to the car, not even the dome lights inside would turn so im guessing this is your problem

 

I want to thank everyone who replied and gave there input on what could be wrong. sorry its taken me so long to reply but i was busy trying to get the car towed and brought to my local mechanic. There pretty sure that the problem was a blown fuse....can you belive it? ut now they have to go through and find what caused it. Im hoping that its not that much $ thanx and i will keep you updated

 

Well i just heard from the shop and they said that there was a short in the wiring on the o2 sensor.......do you guys think that that could have caused my car to run rich?

 

I have 2 maxima's that had that problem..

1) '89 auto -- the transmission bushing, try pushing the selector up (when it's in park. You may notice some extra play in the distane of the gears) then turn over. If this is your problem, a bushing is about $0.35 from Nissan.

2) '91 5-speed -- there is a fuse that seems to blow every so often. it is in the fuse box under the steering wheel. the fuse is called "Eng Cont" or something like that. It should be the first (or second) 10amp fuse on the right side of the box. Remember don't oversize the fuse. (ie 10amp --> 20amp) You will start a fire.

Also a cool tip. If you wire a switch to this fuse --> when it's off the car won't start. When it's on the car starts...

A $2.00 Kill swhitch...

 

Oh... one other thing...

is there any corrosion on the positive battery treminal? You know that white crusty build up? If ther is that can also cause the problem.. clean it with some coke (i know it sound weird, but it works). If it is cracked just buy a new one they're about $0.90 and take like 20min to install.

Also, you can get a 3.00 can of battery terminal protectant from the parts strore. It puts a red glaze on terminals and prevents corrosion. It works VERY well!
